The mincing little man suggests that I should attend a dental school for, say a year before Or BrndT derstand me. I concede there are a few things, quite a few, that I don't know about dentistry. In fact I imag ine it would be easier to men tion the things I do know about dentistry. One thing I do know It is that the science of dentistry is far, far behind tile art, so far as the rank and tile are con cerned. I mean that you would do well to temper your admira tion for the technical skill of the dentist in designing, con structing and Installing inlays, crowns, bridges and the like with due consideration for shortcomings as a doctor. This is no petty quibble. As an illustration of the medical shortcomings of the average dentist there is the case of the girl (aged 27) whose plight was described in the talk here the other day entitled "Conspiracy Against Happiness. She had had a lot of trouble with her teeth, spent a great deal of money on them, but her family dentist had been able to save most of them for her. Now there was what I call a good dentist. She married, moved down to another city, became pregnant, had more trouble with her teeth. The new dentist, having filled a few teeth, evidently wanted to go fishing or some thing, for next thing she knew he had persuaded the poor girl to let him extract five teeth. Now there was what I call a can't print the right word for It. But that Is just warming up for the crime to follow. With the loss of the five teeth the un fortunate young woman of course began to uge rapidly, as must any one who has but sev enteen teeth, all front teeth. left to chew with. As soon as she was old enough so that she could no longer put up a fight In self defense, the wretched dentist and the stingy husband urged her to have ALL of her remaining teeth extracted, as that would require only one or two visits to the dentist and save the husband the extra car fare etc. Don't think I'm exaggerating the enormity of this crime of depriving unwary customers of all their teeth. It is a shameful and scandalous kind of malprac tice and those responsible for it whether they be dentists, doc tors or laymen ought to be made to suffer the penalty. And the layman, particularly the Wiseacre layman, needs to wake from nineteenth century nap and get some modern Ideas into his head, concerning the value of each and every tooth Hnntistrv can Dossibly save, in building and maintaining health, vite, happiness, longevity. Radium Detector Finds $700 Pack I n Wastepaper Salt Lake City Aug 8 U.R) Finding needles In stacks may be a bit tedious but presents no other dilficultles to University of Utah scientists. The local dermatologist report ed Saturday that he had tossed a packet of four radium needles, valued a,t- $700 Into his waste basket, and that they were some where In a frelghtcar load of baled waste paper. A radium detector located the approximate location of the needles, and two hours of rou tine back work did the rest. Os Mall Tribune Want Ada By Charles H. Herrold United Press Correspondent Washington, Aug. 8 (U.R) Labor union leaders are mobil izing their 13,875,000 members for what they regard as labor's most 1 m p o r t a nt Presidential campaign. The union membership, which Is 28 per cent of the nation's total labor force and equal to 27 per cent of the total 1940 vote for president, is composed of 7, 000,000 in the American Feder ation of Labor, 5,500,000 in the Congress of Industrial Organiza tlons, 600,000 In the United Mine Workers, 400,000 in the five independent railway broth erhoods, and 375,000 in Inde pendent unions. CIO For Roosevelt The CIO, through its political action committees, has already endorsed President Roosevelt and Sen. Harry S. Truman, the democratic nominees. The com mittees are raising funds to as sure their election. The executive council of the AFL, which is adhering to its traditional policy of not endors ing candidates m a national elec tion, is scheduled to hold its quarterly meeting in Chit-ago be ginning Aug. 21 and may adopt resolutions condemning rome ad ministration labor policies. The council is free to speak ts mind, though it cannot commit the AFL. An AFL spokesman said that the council, composed nf Presi dent William Green, the secretary-treasurer and 13 vice-presidents, will discuss the policies in executive sessions expected to last 10 days. Most of tne meet ing will be devoted to assem bling the report for presentation to the annual AFL convention in New Orleans in November. John L. Lewis, UMW presi dent, is expected to announce his campaign position at the annual UMW convention opening in Cincinnati Sept. 12. Representa tives of the mine leader, whose hostility to the Roosevelt admin istration is no secret, were un derstood to have received "very satisfactory" treatment of Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, the Repub lican presidential nominee, at conferences in Pittsburgh a week ago. A UMW spokesman, discussing political trends among miners in the past two years, said there has been a drift, to the Repub lican ticket in h,cal elections in West Virginia, Kentucky eastern Tennessee and Pennsylvania. The Railway Labor Execu tives' association, which en dorsed Gov. Homer Aiikins of Arkansas for a senatoria1 scat at their meeting here last week, re frained from making an endorse ment of the top national candi dates in accordance with long-established custom. George Peckham At Pref light School Continues Singing Friends 61 George Peckham, former Medford resident now a warrant officer in the air corps and stationed at San Antonio, Tex., at the pre-flight school of the army air force aviation cadet center, will be Interested to hear that he is continuing his musical activities at the Texas center. Officer Peckham, a bass singer, was Identified with many musical groups and activities when he resided here and is well known. Writing recently to friends here, he said, "They keep me busy singing here and I do about all I can of it. It keeps me warm ed tip. Today I broke my record for services when I sang for seven different chapel services between 8 and 12 noon. Tomor row I am doing a little show, as you can see by the poster.
