Mexican "Jap" Is Taken From Center For Army Induction Manzanar, Cal., Aug. 5 (U.R) The strange case of a Los Angeles youth of Mexican par entage who passed himself off as a Japanese-American for two years was revealed today with the announcement he would be released from the Manzanar Japanese relocation center for induction into the army. The youth is Ralph Lazo, 19, the son of a navy veteran of World War I. Lazo, who registered as an American born Japanese in May, 1942, and was sent to Manzanar, has been out of the center only twice. In December 1943, he returned to Los An geles to appear before his draft beard and early this month he represented the Manzanar Y.M. C.A. t a Hi-Y conference in Estcs Park, Colo. He gave as his reason for registering as of Japanese par entage: "My J a p a n e se-American friends at high school were or dered to evacuate the west coast, so I decided to go along with them. Country Areas Must Provide Food, Market for Indus I trial Products By Leonard C. Schubert United Press Correspondent - Milwaukee (UP.) Those whose conception of rural Amer ica is symbolized in the term "country hick'! have overlooked the important role farming areas of the nation must perform after the war, in the opinion of educational .and agricultural leaders who spoke here recently. "The -communities of rural America have a tremeidous task in the turbulent years ahead," Prof- Frank- W. Cyr, in charge of rural education, Teachers Col lege, Columbia University, New York, told the recent Midwest conference of the American Farm Bureau Federation. He named five objectives of rural communities, as follows: 1. To- build in themselves a strong, healthy, wholesome, satisfying way of life. 2. To provide food, fiber and some of the raw products for in dustry. 3. To provide a market for the products of industry. 4. To supply the cities with a continuous stream of new blood. 5. To act as a social stabilizer to our national life. Must Master Machines "The flood of modern ma chines released in the next few years when industry directs it self to peacetime work can be used to build the finest kind of community life the world has yet seen," Prof. Cyr asserted. "Or it can just as definitely de stroy rural communities," he warned, "as the weapons of war fare are doing now. Our citizens must be trained to direct the use of the machine." Higher farm incomes are es sential, too, Prof. Cyr pointed out, but he added the warning that higher incomes In them selves would not be sufficient to insure better rural communities "unless the people are trained to use that income to this end." He said-it was the task of rural edu cation to teach its pupils how to solve their problems by offering courses which grow out of and enrich human life under a sound school district organization which will serve rural America today as effectively as pioneer school districts served the pioneer age. He suggested some special methods to carry effectively education to small communities. Among these were use of circuit teachers, supervised correspon dence study, pupil transports tion, and mobile units which carry libraries, health services and machine shops from school to school. Prof. Cyr also con demned artificiality in the pres ent organization of rural educa tion and recommended that this situation be remedied by restor ing the rural ritl'7pn in hi fnr. Rest With Laymen "Teachers are trained, text books written, educational laws are made and national policies worked out all on a state, reg ional or nation-wide basis," Prof. Cyr pointed out. "Usually those matters are largely decided by professional educators. They should be decided by laymen, with the help and advice of edu cators. We must find some way that educators and agricultural leaders working together on a nation-wide basis and in each region and state will develop educational policies for building the kind of public schools rural America needs.
