TAKESHIGH TOLL Germans Step Up Attack; Many Sleeping Patients Die In Horror. London, July 29 U.R Ap parently using a synchronized firing schedule, the Germans stepped up their flying bomb offensive against civilian Eng land today, launching the wing ed, blind weapons of destruc tion from several points so that they reached the coast simul taneously in bunches. The bombing schedule reach ed the peak of acceleration dur ing the early morning hours and then was followed by a short lull during which rescue workers continued their never ending task of all but sifting the wreckage of homes, shops and again today, those of a large hospital. A robot bomb crashed direct ly into the hospital early today and exacted a terrible toll. Many of the victims were per sons who had just a few hours before been injured in other bomb explosions. PHOENIX CORPORAL IN OUTSTANDING OUTFIT An Eighth Air Force Liber ator Station, England Cpl. John J. Wright of Phoenix, Ore., is an Armorer in this group, cited for distinguished and outstanding service in 100 combat missions over Europe. The group, com manded by Col. Irvine A. Ren dle, of Rawlins, Wyo., made its 100th mission in support of the initial landings by Allied forces in France. The citation, issued by Maj.-Gen. James P. Hodges, division commanding general, covered nfissions to Berlin, Friedrichshaven, Poland. Frank furt, Norway, Holland, Belgium and France. Use Mall Tribune Wane Ada. Per Gallon Medford, Ore. , GBOlOU!E f 1 SGT. HOUSE SENDS IN Mrs. W. I. House of Route 4, box 217 has received from her son, Sgt. Donald House of the amphibian engineers, stationed in New Guinea, a copy of a radio script broadcast from there and telling of the work of his unit, including the stories of two heroic men who particular ly distinguished themselves in the dangerous work. House, who left the United States in January of 1943, landed in New Guinea May 21 of that year, and writes that he is "still very busy." ' The script describes some of the work of the amphibian engi neers in unloading supplies from cargo ships to shore, by barge, often under enemy gunfire or in heavy seas and near treacher ous coral reefs. One Man Cut Off One man in the unit, Sgt. Bobby Winter of Chicago lived through an experience involv ing serious wounds and isolation in enemy territory for two weeks. He was a member of a scouting party in a barge on New Britain Island, 25 miles from base when they were cut off from the sea by Jap barges. The men escaped into the jungle except Winter who was wounded in both legs and re mained behind. The Japs failed to find him, and in a week his legs healed sufficiently so he could walk about a small area. U. S. planes, mistaking him for a Jap, strafed him, and an earth quake hit the island, but after a couple of weeks natives sent by his buddies found him and evacuated him to his base. Other "heroes" in the unit were Cpl. Stephen Popa of De troit and Junior N. Van Noy of Preston, Ida., the script contin ues. They were part of a very small force making up a flank landing which protects the main invasion group On one particu lar time they were bombed and strafed by enemy gunfire when they landed, and Van Noy, a soft-spoken lad regarded as a "Mama's boy," was hit by shrap nel in five places but refused to leave his 50-caliber gun, which brought down one plane. Then came the Jap counter-attack, a few nights after the landing. The Americans roused and took their stations auditing the land ing of the three barges carrying Japs. Van Noy and Popa, his loader, manned a gun 15 feet from the water's edge, but held their fire until the barges land ed. One craft was sunk off-shore, and the other two came in ahead of Van Noy. A hand grenade tossed into the gun hole shat tered Popa's leg, and he crawled to safety, expecting Van Noy to follow. Instead, he held his ground and machine-gunned the Japs, directly accounting for at least half of them. Spotted by the line of his tracer bullets, he was killed by the enemy. His buddies buried him next morn ing on the island. TABLE ROCK AREA DECLARES WAR ON MOSQUITO HORDE ' Organizing to combat mosqui toes, reported to be in greater prevalence this year than for some time past, 31 residents of the Table Rock area have form ed the Table Rock Mosquito Control association. A survey of the district was made subse quently by a committee of mem bers, a spokesman for which stated yesterday that they had found evidence to show that pro bably 25 percent of the trouble was caused by inadequate drain age of water, and 75 percent is due to improper use of irriga tion. Officers of the association and committee members urge all water users to exercise the ut most care in seeing that a mini mum of water is left standing in fields after irrigation, as mos quitoes can deposit eggs in very small amounts of water, and only six or seven days later they are hatched. Other activities of the group include plans for a cooperative effort in oiling lar ger bodies of water. John Nealon is president of the newly-formed association, and Everett Brown is vice presi dent. Norma Miller is secretary treasurer. Also engaged in mosquito ex terminating activities in this dis trict are the sanitation branch and the post engineers at Camp White, and the County Health office is cooperating in the ef fort. Pvt. Hite Finishes Marine Training Marine Private Ralph L. Hite, son of Mrs. Georgia R. Smith, route 4, Medford, has been grad uated from the Infantry Train ing School at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., and is now ready for assignment to an in fantry battalion, according to a press release from the marine corps. Private Hite attended Phoenix high school where he was awarded letters in basketball and baseball. Prior to entering the corps he was employed by the Crystal Springs company.
