To Convention C. C. Leon ard, exalted ruler and Ernest Scott, secretary of the Medford Elks lodge, accompanied by their wives, left here by train Wednesday night to attend the national Elks convention in Chi cago July 29 to Aug. 3, inclusive. Officer Home Flight Officer Douglas Eden is in Medford on leave from the air corps and is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Eden, 211 Genesee street. He recently completed his training at Ardmore, Okla., and leaves next Tuesday to report to a new field. Slightly Injured Mrs. Everett Skeeters of Prospect was slight ly hurt Wednesday night when the car she was driving was In volved in an accident on the Crater Lake highway three miles southwest of Prospect with a vehicle operated by Har old M. Swanson, also of Pros pect, according to a report on file today. Griffiths Improving David Griffiths, who entered the veter ans' hospital in Portland a week ago for medical treatment, was reported today to be improving. Mrs. Griffiths, who accompanied him north, returned to Medford this morning, and plans to re main here. She states that her husband will be confined in the hospital for several weeks yet. Court Citations State police yesterday cited Roy Gene How ard, 28 of 702 Pine street to ap pear in justice of the peace court at 2 p.m. July 31 charged with failure to stop at a stop street. Dale M. Morris, 26 of Ashland was cited to appear at the same time on a charge of driving a car without an operator's license. Charged with a similar offense, Richard W. Straus, 16 of 324 South Grape street was cited to appear this afternoon. Smokers, Campers Cause Many Fires Kiwanis Club Told A. D. McReynolds, district fire warden, told the weekly lunehenn.mpptino- r4 v vu wanis club in the Hotel Holland I Wednesday that, while 40 per cent of the fires in forested areas are started by lightning, care lessness of smokers and campers was responsible for a goodly number of conflagrations every year. McReynolds said that the state forest patrol in this district patrolled a million and a quar ter acres in Jackson and Jose phine counties, with 100 men employed. He said there were 187 fires last year, greatest number in 10 years, but that only 461 acres were burned. So Far this season, he said, 93 fires have been reported. Other guests at the meeting were Ken Houts of Seattle, Leslie S. Kofoed of Reno New, Theodore B. Jensen of the West Seattle Kiwanis club, Albert L. James of Medford and Luella Lewis of Medford, guest pianist. OBITUARY MITCHEL INFANT Douglas Leroy Mltchel, in fant son of Mr. and Mrs. Her man Bub Mltchel, 824 W. 13th St., passed away at a local hos pital at 3:20 o'clock this morn ing after, having lived only a few hours. SURPLUS PLANES OF MANY TYPES Washington, July 28. (U. The Reconstruction Finance Cor poration has started the job of selling approximately $60,168. 000 worth of surplus army and navy aircraft, including train ers, cargo carriers, transports, bombers, and gliders. The smaller craft will be sold on bid, and many of the larger ships through negotiations or at ceiling price yet to be estab lished. Although many of the larger ships are air-worthy. many are damaged to varying degrees. Some can be repaired but have been declared surplus to make room for more modern types by the services. The RFC has on hand 5,129 army and navy planes which it intends to sell as soon as possi. ble. Their original cost was $60,167,997. The agency has al ready disposed of 2,843 planes for the Defense Plant Corpora. tion, an RFC subsidiary. Their value when new was $7,850,749. They brought in $4,336,295. The RFC has an additional 2,139 of Its subsidiary's planes to sell. Most are of the smaller training variety and have -been bringing prices considered good. They are Piper Cubs and Taylor Crafts for the most part. OPA Cites Seven Meat Sellers On Rule Violations Seven Jackson county estab lishments retailing meat have been requested by the price de partment of the local war price and rationing board to make vol untary contributions to the Unit ed States treasurer because of violations of price regulations, it was stated today. The price department recently completed a meat survey covering 35 stores and eleven were found to be in violation of OPA regula tions on either posting or price. The seven stores had violated price regulations prior to the last survey, it was stated. Markets must grade and price the meat according to the chart which is on display in their store, the local OPA price de partment states. DIVERT TANK CARS Washington, July 28 (U.R Deputy Petroleum Administra tor Ralph K. Davis announced today that 2,000 tank cars will be diverted immediately from asphalt service to hauling crude oil into east coast refineries in an effort to meet a sudden in crease in military needs.
