L USE CIVILIANS AS SHIELD IN SIEGE i By Robert Vermillion United Press War Correspondent With the Eighth Army in Italy. July 20 U.R Twenty fanatical Germans were report ed today to have shielded them selves behind 232 men, women, and children in the Saint Ubaldo monastery atop 2,000-foot Monte Inglno, three and one-half miles north of Gubbleo, threatening another Monte Casslno tragedy British officers have thus far withheld fire from the monas tery, although the Germans have been firing mortars from emplacements concealed around the walls and unquestionably with observation from the mon astery towers. The Father Superior sent a priest down the mountain with a note saying the lieutenant in command of the Germans had received orders to defend it to the last man and quoting the lieutenant as saying: "I will see to it that the civil ians die with me." The priest said the civilians Included 70 children, huddled in the dank sub-cellars of the monastery. Upon receipt of the note, the bishop of Gubbio dispatched a letter to Pope Pius invoking his intercession. Hannah Is old now; very old. She crochets some and reads a little but most of the time she just sits and rocks and watches tho people go by. Thcro were so many years when she couldn't sit and rock and watch the peo ple go by. Hannah was born in the mountains of northern Sweden. Summer was sometimes four months long, sometimes only three. The women didn't have time to sit and rock and if they had, there were no people going up and down the steep little mountain trail for them to watch. But they didn't miss this diversion; they were too busy carding and spinning the wool their men had sheared from the sheep. Then there were stock ings, sox and various garments to be knitted after the wool be came yarn. Getting a meal ready wasn't a complicated process. Potatoes were boiled with their Jackets on, then eaten with milk; a bite of potato, a swallow of milk; like that. Rarely did they have meat. Summer brought fresh berries but there were no ways of preserving these since they had no Jars and little sugar. One berry, something like the cranberry, was dried and served as a great delicacy on special occasions during the winter months. The nearest church was over a Swedish mile away. Since a Swedish mile Is almost seven of ours, that made a fourteen mile round trip. They always walked, leaving home at 3:30 a.m. and getting thero in time for the candle-lighted first service. This was two hours long. The service over, they started homo again Mid-summer, the sun scarcely set; mid-winter, it scarcely rose I asked her what they did for fun. She said they "visited" but couldn't recall any organized forms of amusement. Dancing was considered a sin. She re members the children doing what they called "making pic tures." This was done by fling ing themselves Into the snow the Imprint they left being the "picture". Once there was a famine. They pulled the thnteh from the roof and chopped it up for stock feed. Her people remember an- 'other famine when many died oerause hwedon hadn't yet learned to depend on the potato So that time tho thatch was ground, as was the bark of trees, and made Into bread. The emu log digestive troubles caused many deaths. How Hannah came to the United States is a story In itself and I will tell that another time. Her grandchildren tell me she still has a passion for cooking vast quantities and many vane ties of food. I'd have a food hangover too, if I'd grown up on potatoes and milk. THINGS IN Talking about hardened wax n the ear the other day we re minded readers of a good rule for every one t o remember in any circum stance: Never insert in the ear anything smaller than your elbow. It is aston 1 s h i n g how much trouble comparative 1 y s 1 i ght irrita tion in the out Or Brady Irritation of th er ear canal or outer surface of the car drum may cause. It is equally astonishing and to a doctor perhaps embarrassing how easily such a cause of trouble may be overlooked. The irritation in such cases may be due to a plug of harden ed ear wax, or to a foreign body which has lodged in the ear canal by mischance or has been inserted by a child, or an insect which has entered the ear, or the larvae of a fly or other insect that has deposited eggs there, or a fungus growing in the skin like that of a ringworm or foot itch If there is reason to believe a live insect is in the lear, let the patient lie on opposite side and drown the insect by keeping the car filled with warm water, or preferably by irrigating the ear with agreeably warm salt water level tablespoonful table salt in quart of water) from a fountain syring held not more than a foot or so above level of ear and a blunt straight nozzle to direct the stream in to ear canal but not touch the ear. If the insect is not readily washed out In this way, chloroform it by pouring a tea spoonful of chloroform on a wad of absorbent cotton or gauze in a cup or tumbler, and holding it on the car so that the chloroform vapor may penetrate ear canal, but of course nover attempt to put even a drop of chloroform in the ear. Accumulation of dry hardened ear wax, or any foreign body in the ear, may cause unaccount able disturbances of taste, harsh inexplicable coughing, distres sing ear noise, spells of nausea, dizziness. I still blush at the recollection of the grocer's boy with the "ele phant" cough. I stripped and ex amined the lad time after time and found not a thing to account for the cough. But summer came, and Saturday night, and the lad had a bath, got a little water in his ear, and came complaining of the rumbling. I found a plug of hardened wax, and each time I touched the rear wall of the ear canal the lad coughed to beat the band. After that, believe me, I insisted on ex amining the ears with speculum and headlight even if the patient assured me he only had a pain in the ankle.
