Picnic Canton Siskiyou and Auxiliary will have a picnic supper Friday at 6:30 p. m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Itoward of 714 W. 10th St. Everyone is asked to bring his own service. On Furlough Sgt. Clyde Van Ortwick has arrived home by airplane to spend a two-weeks furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Van Ortwick of Route 4. The sergeant has been stationed at Muric, Calif., and on reporting at the expiration of his furlough will go to Camp Shelby, Miss. In Ashland Elwood Hedberg, assistant cashier of the First Na tional bank of Portland, Med ford branch, is in Ashland this week helping out at the bank there during the absence of G. H. Wenner, who is on a vaca tion. Hedberg lived in Ashland several years ago and was em ployed at the bank. Hold Traffic Check In a traf fic check at the state scales on the south Pacific highway from 6 p. m. to a minute before mid night Tuesday, state police is sued six citations to motorists, five of them for driving without operator's license's and one for driving an overloaded trucK Cherked were 493 passenger vehicles and 33 trucks. Visit Here Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Pinne, at. 917 Murray St., are Mr. Pinne's brothers, J. F. Pinne and J. E. Pinne. J. F. Pinne is a retired hardware salesman from Spencer, la. He has travel ed northern Iowa for 35 years. J. E. Pinne, a retired farmer from Valley, Nebr., has not seen his brother, W. E. Pinne for 49 . years. J. F. Pinne and his wife visited in Medford 15 years ago. Promoted Word has been re ceived here that S-Sgt. Delmar L. Wright has been promoted to T-Sgt. with the signal section of the 13th Air Force. Sgt. Wright has been in the South Pacific for over a year and has been home but a few hours in the past two years. He is a grad uate of radar school in Camp Murray, Fla. He now works on radar and radio equipment on planes and ships. Set. Wright writes that when the thermome ter goes over 100 degrees the boys Just quit noticing it, and the humidity is terrific. From South Mrs. George Winnie of Pasadena, Calif., is visiting with her mother-in-law, Mrs. Nell Winnie of 609 West 10th St. Lt. Commander George Winnie is in the South Pacific on an aircraft carrier. Visiting John Shepard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Shep ard of Portland is visiting at the home of Capt. and Mrs. Edward Kelly, 430 Haven St. He is a school mate of the Kelly's son, Bernard and this is the fourth summer that he has spent here. Car Struck H. C. Manning of Ashland reported to city police Tuesday that his 1939 Chevrolet sedan, parked in a yard at Phoenix, was struck by a northbound machine that drove off after the smashup. Manning said his car was con siderably damaged. LT. OAK LEAF CLUSTER Second Lt. Louis N. Iven, 20, of Medford, bombardier on a Flying Fortress, has been award ed the first Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal, according to an announcement from his head quarters at a bomber station in England. Lt. Iven is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Iven of 1006 W. Fourth street. A graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Medford, Lt. Iven entered the air force in November of 1942, and re ceived his bombardier's wings in December, 1943, at Victorville, Calif. The official citation reads, "for exceptionally meritorius achievement, while participating in combat missions over enemy occupied continental Europe. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by Lt. Iven upon these occasions reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the united states. RACHEL GRUBB, ASHLAND PASSES IN CALIFORNIA Ashland-, July 19 Word has been received by local relatives that Rachel Grubb, widow of the late Postmaster Millard Grubb, died in Banning. Cal., yesterday. His fingerprints caught him. Henry Brookfleld, then a young man of 29, ran away from prison while he was a trusty, serving a 5-year sentence from Denver for car theft.
