Newspaper Page TextTWO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, July 19, IS44 THREE DEATHS IN PLANE SMASHUPS NEAR SANTA ROSA San Francisco, July 10 (U.R) Four planes crashed In . the Santa Rosa, Calif., area yester day, killing three men, the army and navy announced today, 2nd Lt. Claicnce A. Nichols, 25, Great Bend, Kan., was killed near Pt. Arena when his fighter plane from tht Santa Rosa army air field crashed on a combat training flight. Nichols' widow lives at Santa Rosa. . In a second Pt. Arena accident, two navy planes collided in mid air on a routine flight and both pilots bailed out. Lt. C. N Seaver, 23, Westmonte, N. J., was dangled from a tree for 12 hours when his parachute be came entangled and was rescued today, Lt. Joo M. Scoggins, 25, Tatum, Tex., was picked up last night. The third accident occurred when a navy Hell Diver in which an officer and an enlisted man were observing target exercises, crashed Into the Santa Rosa river. Names of the dead were withheld. CANTEEN WILL APPEAL JIVE DANCER AWARD Hollywood, July 19 (U.R) The Hollywood Canteen yester day filed notice In superior court that lt would appeal the $7931 damage award made last May 17 to Radio Performer Flor ida Edwards. Navv nhnwv 359,168 Population Seen for Portland I n Sample Census Washington, July 19 -(U.R The resident population of Port land, Ore., Increased .17.6 per cent to 359,168 between April 1. 1940, and the middle of May this ! year, final results from a sample i census revealed today. The in ; crease was 53.774 over the 305,- 394 reported In the April 1, 1940, census. The Portland-Vancouver pro duction area showed a net pop ulation increase of 159.308, or 31.8 per cent, showing that the greatest population Increase was outside the city of Portland it self. The area .Immediately out side the Portland metropolitan district had an Increase of 62,334, or 61.7 per cent. The Portland Vancouver area Is made up of Clackamas, Mult nomah and Washington counties In Oregon, and Clark county in Washington. DOUGLAS OFFICES BURN WITH $1,500,000 LOSS Chicago, July 19 (UP) The Administration building of the vast Douglas Aircraft Corp., plant was destroyed by fire to day and damage was estimated by company officials at more than $1,500,000. The fire broke 6ut In a pho tographic laboratory on the first floor of the two-story building shortly after midnight. Assembly lines producing C 54 transport planes were un damaged and company officials said work would proceed with out delay. Machinist Resumes Hiccouph Marathon Los Angeles, July 19 (U.R) Lawrence Schone, 31, who hic cupped nine days straight from exhaustion, worry and frustra tion over house hunting, was hiccuping again today after a few hours' relief. Schone began hiccuping Inter mittently yesterday morning af ter resting comfortably through Monday night. Doctors fed him glucose through a duodenal tube in a last attempt before resort ing to surgery. The machinist's pneumonia, following the hiccup attack, was under control. I It will require two or more days to definitely determine the condition of W. C. (Clay) Johns, express company employee, who sustained concussion of the brain as a result of being slugged by Corp. Walter Francis Kivasi- ver. Camp White soldier, In front of Kyle's restaurant in Central Point last Sunday eve ning, Dr. Charles T. Sweeney, the attending physician,- report ed today. Kivasiver is held in custody at Camp White await ing formal action. Two other civilians, R. F. Watson and Robert Petersen, were also assaulted by the sol diers after they left their autos at the restaurant but were not seriously hurt. Kivasiver - approached the civilians as they parked their vehicles and committed the un provoked attacks. William Powell and Wallace Beery when they reach 65 was approved to day by stockholders of Loew s, Incorporated. Loew's will pay the entire cost of the pension plan, which will cover some 4300 employes, in cluding executives and officers. The company estimated that the cost for the first year will be approximately S3 500,000. EDWARDS GRADUATES FROM GENNERY CLASS Air Cadet Herbert L. Ed wards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ros- coe L. Edwards of 20 Laurel street, was graduated last week from the army air forces flex ible gunnery school, Laredo Army Air Field, Laredo, Tex., a member of the AAF Training Command, according to an an nouncement received from the field. WATER ENOUGH TO COVER THIS YEAR Irrigation Is now at the sum mer peak in the valley and there is sufficient water to carry through, but with no prospect for holdover in the reservoirs for next year, according to Ed N. Judd, manager of the Med ford Irrigation District. The water in some creeks, tapped for Irrigation, has start ed to drop, but is still being used. The normal rainfall is now five Inches less than last year and the hope Is for a rainy win ter with much snow in the hills. The thunderstorm that broke over the valley at midnight last night was too brief to do any good. County Agent Robert G. Fowler said no damage to crops has been reported. The storm centered In this city and near by areas. No rain fell In Jack sonville, but some dampened the lower applegate. Knox Promoted At England Base The promotion of Galen R. Knox, 27, from the grade of ser geant to staff sergeant has been announced at his Flying Fort ress base, a bomber station in England, by his group command er, according to word received here. Sgt. Kr.ox Is a flight chief In the armament department. Staff Sgt, Knox Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland J. Knox of 221 Portland avenue. His wife, Leah J. Knox, Uw at 418 W. Eleventh street Prior to en tering the air force in October, 1942, Sgt. Knox was employed as an airplane engine mechanic at Paine Field, Everett, Wash.
