July T. 1944 MEDFOHD MAR. TRIBUNE THREE Hopkins Returns to White House Office Washington, July 7. U.R Harry L. Hopkins, for years ranking adviser to President Roosevelt, returned to his White House office today after a six months illness. Hopkins, who had been recu perating at an army hospital at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., resumed his duties as special as sistant to the president, chair man of the munitions assign ment board, and member of the war mobilization committee. The War Food Administra tion's office of labor plans to bring into this country from Jamaica between 12,000 and 13,- 000 workers to- relieve critical farm labor shortages this sum mer. Churches to Begin Union Park Service Sunday Afternoon The Medford Ministerial As sociation will open their summer "open-air" services In the city park Sunday at 4:30 p. m., it was announced today. Similar public gathering held last year were well attended, and the associa tion members felt that much spiritual good was accomplished. Mrs. Meyer Cites War Center Chaos Pittsburgh, July 7 (U.R) Mrs. Eugene Meyer, wife of the publisher of the Washington Post, and author and lecturer In her own right, told the National Education conference here that social conditions In some of the nation's war centers Is "chaotic." As many of you live In war centers, you know'as I what In human living conditions that are still enduring in many cities, that children are still locked In or out of their homes because the mother Is at work and has no means of looking after them, that truancy, misdemeanors and even youthful crimes are still in 10 All workers who seek gasoline for a change of residence to an other county or state will now be required to give a certifica tion from the United States Em ployment Service or the Emer gency Farm Labor office, which in Medford is located In the Chamber of Commerce building, when they apply at the local war price and ration board for the gasoline. Previously only migra tory farm workers were re quired to obtain the certificates but a new provision of the OPA provides that all workers do so, farm workers at the Emergency Farm Lubor office and others at the Employment Service of fice. Large amounts of gasoline are being drained from local supplies for changes of residence, accord ing to Edmond Eggen, OPA dis trict mileage rationing repre sentative, making the new plan necessary. Since boards will require the ' new forms before a gasoline ap plication for change of residence will be considered, all plant em-! ployment offices are being re-; quested to pass this information i on to employees planning to ' leave the county or state, Eggen i said. In addition, the applicant must satisfy the board that a bona fide change of residence is being made. No ration will be issued for travel merely to seek employment elsewhere, he em phasized, j Truckers' Dispute Going to Roosevelt Washington, July 7 (U.R) j The War Labor Board today vot- j ed unanimously to send to the White House n wage dispute In-; volvlng 103 mid-western truck-! ing companies and 20.000 em- ployes. I The operators, members of the Midwest Operators' associa-! tion, had refused to comply with a WLB directive ordering a scv-cn-cent-an-hour wage boost for , over-the-road truck drivers. Nine I other operators involved in the dispute agreed at a show cause hearing at WLB headquarters to comply with tho order.
