OF Rome, July 6. (U.R) Ameri can armored forces battled half way through the stronghold of Rosignano, keystone to the Ger man defenses before Livorno, today while other allied troops smashed northward toward Flor ence and Ancona in a general advance of one to more than five miles. , Driving rains and deep mud hampered the attacking 5th and 8th armies, but official reports said they were moving north ward with increasing speed all along the front, riding rough shod over extensive enemy demolitions and the bitterest op position since the fall of Rome. Only on the western coastal strip were the desperate Ger mans able to stem the allied tide momentarily, taking every ad vantage of The rugged terrain and long prepared defenses around Rosignano, 12 miles be low Livorno, and the coastal town of Castiglioncello, 10 miles below the big seaport. Even there, the Nazis were being pushed back yard by yard through the gun-studded streets by powerful American tank' and infantry forces that slugged their way into the center of the town late yesterday. S. bombers within 770 miles of the Philippines while U. S. marines and soldiers mopped up the last Japanese defenders on northern Saipan island in the Marianas. Disclosing that the bloody Saipan campaign was nearing a successful conclusion, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz expressed "high hopes" of increasing pres sure on Japan with his Pacific fleet now approaching peak ef ficiency. - . Nimitz at a press conference said the fleet had developed a secret weapon for operations in the western Pacific solution of the problem of supply. ' American infantrymen, meet ing only slight opposition, seized Kornasoren airdrome Tuesday while Royal American air force crews prepared nearby Kamiri airstrip which fell Sunday, for operations, a communique re ported. THE GRANGE Central Point Grange Central Point Grange will meet Friday, July 7. A patriotic program will be presented. : One feature of the program will be a flag drill presented by Juvenile Grange followed by the Preamble to the Constitution by Eula Foley. RETURNED HERE Military, requirements for fountain pens are expected by the War Production Board to to tal more than 2,000,000 a quar ter in 1944. The 1 l-months-old Luchter Jiand baby, Paul, abandoned by his mother at a bus station in Portland last Sunday, was back in Medford today at the home of a local minister and his wife who requested that their , iden tity not be made public. The father, Fred Luchterhand an employe at Camp White, re turned the child to Medford yesterday and took it to the people who had cared for it since the first of March. According to the minister's wife, the baby was taken Into their home when Luchterhand told them of the difficulty he was having in locating some body to care for the child. Luchterhand and the minister are employed in the same de partment at Camp White. Couple Divorced She said that Luchterhand ob tained a divorce from his wife, and custody of the child, sev eral months ago, but that Mrs. Luchterhand returned to Med ford last week and, after a long discussion, it was decided that Mrs. Luchterhand would take the baby to the home of her parents in Oneida, N. Y., where both formerly resided. Luchter hand, the minister's wife said, bought them bus tickets to Oneida. Prior to abandoning the child in Portland, Mrs. Luchterhand telephoned Luchterliand here and told him she and the baby were stranded there, unable to find seats on east-bound buses or a room in the city, the minister's wife said. Had Train Tickets Luchterhand then bought them train tickets and they were wired from here. In the mean time, however, Mrs. Luchter hand had left the baby with a strange woman in the Portland bus station, saying she wanted "to make a telephone call," and failed to return, according to Portland police. When the train ticket wire arrived in Portland and Mrs. Luchterhand could not be locat ed, Portland police pieced two and two together and tele phoned Luchterhand here, thus establishing the identity of the baby. So far as is known, Mrs. Luch terhand has not yet been picked up in Portland. United States eighth air Tprce was the second blow in t 9pne two punch, the Royal Air rrce hrving sent some 1,000 oft, its heavy bombers out on a similar night mission extending from deep in France to the Ruhr val ley of Germany. The first American airmen returning from the continent said the bombers ran into in tense antiaircraft fire at some places but saw no German fight ers. The daylight assault by the GEORGIA PRIMARY By United Press The drive of the Congress of Industrial Organizations to'elim inate its critics from Washington suffered a defeat in Georgia's July 4 Democratic primary when Reps. Eugene Cox and Hugh Peterson trounced their labor-supported opponents. Cox, who often has denounced CIO tactics, won renomination by more than a two to one mar gin over former Congressman J. H. Smithwlck. Peterson, whose first dictrict includes thousands of shipyard workers at Savannah, also won easily, polling 12,000 votes to the combined total of 4,967 for his two opponents. S IN FIELD Pendleton, Ore., July 6 (U.R) Approximately 18,000 acres of wheat and barley and 2,000 of range land were desolate today after a three-day fire in the Sandhollow district, 25 miles southwest of Hcrmiston. Moro than 500 men battled the blaze, which was brought under control late Wednesday. Some old homestead buildings at sheep camps were destroyed but no ranch houses or barns were damaged. Live stock had all been moved to the higher ranges. The fire was stopped In lis spread east by summerfallow ground.
