False Alarm The City Fire Department was called to the Lawrence Jewelry store yester day at 4:57 to investigate smoke which was coming from the basement of the establishment, but which turned out to be only the furnace. Soldier Arrested Charles E. Moody, 18, of headquarters company, Western Personnel Reassignment Center, Camp White, was arrested by state police yesterday and turned over to military authorities on a charge of forging an endorse ment to a check for 549.47. Validate Stamps Five addi tional blue stamps totaling SO points will be good for buying rationed processed foods on July 1 according to an an nouncement from the district OPA food rationing represent ative. The stamps are W-8, X-8, Y-8, Z-8 and A-5 and will be good indefinitely. Son Born A son was born June 26 to Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Reames of Tocoma accord ing to word received here by friends. The infant, which weighed seven pounds and 12 ounces, has been named after his grandfather, the late Alfred Evan Reames of Medford, wide ly known attorney and a for mer United States senator. Mrs. A. Evan Reames is in Tacoma visiting her son and daughter-in-law. Receives Cluster A brartze oak-leaf cluster to the Air Med al has been awarded to First Lt. Larry Schade of Medford, ac cording to an air force news re lease. Lt. Schade, pilot with the army air forces stationed in New Guinea, recently was awarded the medal and cited for meritorious achievement and received a second citation from Lt. Gen. George C. Ken ney when the cluster was awarded, the dispatch from New Guinea states. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Schade, Sr., 989 South Oakdale avenue. Sander Here Pvt. Fred Cyril Sander arrived home from Tampa, Fla., on a furlough last Friday evening and expects to spend about two weeks visiting his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Sander of Oak Grove road. Pvt. Sander has just recently visited with his two brothers, Flight Command er Aubrey Sander of Dorr Field, Fla., and Capt. Harold Sander of the A.T.C. of Long Beach, Calif. Pvt. Sander, head in structor in the information cen ter department at Drew Field. Fla., has been stationed there for the past eight months. EQUITY CASE SET FOR JULY 12 E The equity case of Charles R. Ray and others versus his broth er, Frank H. Ray, others and the Gold Ray Realty and Gold Ray Investment companies has been set for July 17 before Circuit Judge H K. Hanna. Jessie Masr iun, circuit court reporter has been appointed referee. The plaintiffs, Charles R. Ray, Dorothy Ray, Mabel R. Ray and Ada Ruth Roberts, are suine, for the appointment of a receiver for ths two companies, managed by Frank H. Rav; the cancella tion of his lo ms to the two com panies, a'leged in the comnlaint to total approximately S41.000. and $50,000 d.imnges they allege occurred through the improper management of the two com panies bv F'link H. Ray.- The plaintiffs, minority stock holders in the two companies, claim that an r-.udit of the books by A. Crin S"henck showed that income o" the companies during the past 18 yi'ars was some $35. 000 and that no dividentU had been paid to the minority t.oup. Judge Hanna now has under advisemcr.i a motion of Gorge M. Roberts, attorney for the de fendants, to strike out potions of the amended complaint of the plaintiffs. Amer ican armored forces crashed through bitter Gorman resist ance along the Italian west coast highway and drove for ward more than seven miles to within 25 miles of Livorno (Leg horn), a communique reported today. Other Allied columns were on the march northward along a broad front stretching more than 100 miles inland shelling and bayoneting fanatical German rear guards from their makeshift defenses below Siena and in the hills around Perugia. Allied headquarters revealed that the number of prisoners captured since the beginning of the offensive on May 11 has swelled to more than 32.000 men, of whom 25.000 were taken by the 5th army. Everywhere the Nazis were battling desperately to delay the march on their Pisa Florence -Rimini line, now only 35 to 55 miles beyond the advancing Al lied columns, but front dis patches indicated they were be ginning to crack under the sus tained fury of the 5th and 8th army drive. YANK TANK FORCE NEARING LEGHORN DOUBLE HOLIDAY LISTS $320,721 TOTAL FOR YEAR The city school budget for 1944-45, as prepared by the budget committee at a meeting Tuesday, calls for a total of $320,721 for all purposes, with operating costs listed at $299, 991 and bond principal and in terest payments set at $20,730, the city school superintendent's office disclosed today. Public hearing on the budget will be held July 20 at 8 p. m. in the city school superintendent's of fice. Occasioned wholly by an ap proximate 10 per cent Increase in salaries of teachers and jan itors, operating costs are $16, 716 higher than last year. But, it was pointed out, excess cash on hand of $7,487.75 over last year ' makes the amount neces sary to be levied by tax $615.50 less than last year. The $16,716 operating cost is a decrease from last year of $10,008.75 in the amount to be raised for bond principal and interest. It was brought out at the meeting that the last of .the bond issue voted in 1925 for erection of the building which is now the junior high school was paid during the past year. Total bonded indebtedness of the school district is now $124, 000. Budget committee was com posed of Seth M. Bullis, chair man; O. O. Alenderfer, George Frey, Charles Clay and John C. Mann. The school board is com posed of Eugene Thorndike, chairman; Dr. R. E. Green, M. B. Jarmin, N. H. Franklin and John P. Moffat. TALENT CHILDREN URGED TO HELP IN JUNIOR JEEP SHOP Talent. June 29 Talent Jun ior Red Cross "Jeep Shop" open ed Monday at 9 a. m. in the high school basement and set its schedule as follows: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 to 12 and 1 to 3. Boys and girls of grade and high school age are welcome and urged to volunteer their time to produce as many recreational articles for the wounded service men as possible this summer. Purpose of the Talent "Jeep Shop" will be to work on hospi tal projects, Christmas decora tions for men overseas, and toys for refugee children. "Jeeps" are asked to bring tin cans and odd jars for vases for flowers for the painting project: Christmas cards, colored paper, ribbon, tinsels and used enve lopes for the Christmas project: also, magazines, fokei and puzzles for the hospital books. The girls are making stuffed ani mal toys for homeless children and can use scraps of cotton prints, snippinps and threat. . Anyone in the neighborhood having any of thc?e articles to volunteer for use in the "Jeep Shop" should contact Mr. B. R. Walsh, captain of the shop, or any member of the committee. "Everything we are making is needed at once by our wotmclrd men and refugee children; it is an important and worthwhile project and every child should be glad to have a chance to take part in lt," Mrs. Walsh declared. June 29 (U.R1 Repeal of the law that requires relatives of inmates of state ho pitals to pay for thejr support will be sought at the next ses sion of 'he legislature Secretary of State Robert S. Farrcll. Jr., has repdrted to the board of con trol. The law Is wrong In principle and has worked hardship on many who have relatives in the hospitals, Farrell said. The as sessment has been waived only where relativ are financially unable to pay. Between $20,000 and $25,000 per month Is obtained in this manner with the monthly assess ment being $25 per patient. The warning was issued by John E. Gribble. 139 Ken wood, member of the county committee , on "Keep Oregon Green" of which Robert Dodge of Ashland is chairman. Each group entering the woods to picnic, camp or fish should carry a shovel, axe and bucket, Mr. Gribble pointed out, to be used in case of fire. He also called attention to the rules set forth by members of the Keep Oregon Green committee for use of tcavelers in forested areas. These include the caution to be sure matches are complete ly out by breaking them in two, and extinguishing of cigarettes, cigar and pipe sparks in the ash trays of cars instead of throw ing them from the window of cars, either moving or standing. Camp Fire Rules Regarding camp fires the rules are that the builder should dig down to bare, damp soil before building the fire, and should re move all inflammable material from the fire circle. .Fires should never be left burning and the procedure in putting them out is to pour water or to pack earth oer the fire, stirring the coals to make certain no spark is left alive and that the fire is com pletely dead. The committee further asks that persons refrain from smok ing in dry areas. Stressing the value of the for ested sections and streams as a basis of recreation, Mr. Gribble recalled a little jingle which he wrote many years ago when he had charge of timber sales in the Klamath area for the forest service. The little poem, re printed now in Elson Basic read er, book five, In use In Medford schools. Is in a chapter on "How a Boy Scout Builds a Camo Fire" and relates: "For want of a forest the stream went dry, For want of a stream the fish all die, For want of a fish the fishermen sigh, All caused by a fire when the brush was dry."
