LOCAL and Fined $1 Glen Gibbons of 20 Barneburg road was fined $1 in city court today on a charge of allowing his dog to run at large. No License Charged with driving a car without an opera tor's license, J. Antram of Route 1 was fined $2.50 in city court today. Posts Bail Ruby Mae Melu gln, 34, charged with being drunk and disorderly in a local restaurant, posted $10 bail with city police Sunday. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Waterman are in the valley visiting with relatives and friends. The Watermans, former residents of Phoenix, now live in Canby, Calif. . Service Announced St. Peter's Day will be marked with a special service at St. Mark's Episcopal church Thursday morning of this week, according to the rector, the Rev. George R. Turney. The service will mark the anniversary of the ordina tion to the diaconate. ... Patrol Member-T5 Laurence A. Ryerson of Medford is with a regiment of military police that has made war-disrupted Naples into one of the most effi cient ports in the world, accord ing to a dispatch from an allied base in Italy. The dispatch states that the regulation of traffic in the city's maze of narrow alleys and congested streets is a seri ous problem and that traffic MPs have had to untangle snarls of vehicles driven by soldiers of the American, English, French, Indian and Polish armies while happy - go - lucky Neapolitans saunter down the middle of the street. These men have cut traf fic accidents by 85 per cent, the dispatch states, allowing more than 30,000 tons of war equip ment to pass through the city daily. Cpl. From what has been said the ?uestion naturally arises, "What 9 Food?" This is a question of importance. Even that which may be good food, under other conditions, if not properly utilized and handled by the physical organ ism is not a food, but may be come a rank poison. Haw kins of Central Point and Robert Padgett of 60 Quince street drove cars involved in a slight mishap at 12th street and Cen tral avenue this morning, ac cording to a report on file. Cars operated by Victor Medford of Phoenix and C. H. Thompson of 1002 West Fourth street were involved in a minor accident on South Front near Eighth street Saturday night, a report on file said today. Graduates Marine Private Donald Eugene Smith, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Smith of 103 Jcannette street, recently was graduated from the field telephone school at San Diego, Cal., Marine Corps base and is now ready for assignment to a combat unit as a communi cations specialist, according to word received from the base. Pvt. Smith is a graduate of Medford high, school, where he played tackle on the football team. Captain Returns Capt. Wei don H. McBee, who for the past two years has been stationed in the South Pacific "war theater with the 41st Infantry Division, arrived in San Francisco Sun day and after reporting at Ft. Lewis, Wash., will return to Medford on 30-day leave. The captain left Medford with the Oregon National Guard unit and was commander of Company A when that unit sailed for over seas duty. To Camp Southern Oregon Baptist Summer Camp opened this morning at Lake o' Woods in the Boy Scout Camp. Twenty five young people from Medford are attending the camp, which will last for a week. All of southern Oregon is included in the camp and nearly 125 people are enrolled. Catches Big Salmon Wyles Berry of Los Angeles proudly exhibited a prize salmon at Mc Leod Saturday. The fish weigh ed 35 pounds and was the first salmon ever landed by Berry. Mr. and Mrs. Berry have pur chased five acres on the river at McLeod and plan to make their home on the property as soon as conditions will permit. m . Return Lloyd Balderston and Bob Weisenburger returned recently from Lake Creek in eastern Oregon where they were employed by a lumber company. The boys, 1944 graduates of Medford high, are now awaiting call for induction. Balderston has completed enlistment into the Army Air Corps while Weisenburger is in the Naval Reserve. It is explain ed that since federal property is not taxable, 25 per cent of the receipts from each national for est is turned over each year to the states and is prorated on an acreage basis to counties con containing national forest for the benefit of public schools and roads. Klamath County, in which other national forests are locat ed, will receive $41,694 under the arrangements. Rogue River National Forest had the' largest receipts of any Oregon national forest, it was stated. War-time conditions increased the cutting of national forest timber, forest officials state, and receipts in recent months are much higher than average. Other sources of revenue from the forest include the rental land for special uses and the grazing of livestock. Oregon Methodists Against Liquor As Aid to Aged Source Portland, Ore., June 26. (U.R) Delegates to the Oregon an nual conference of Methodist churches today assailed the state law that makes old-age assist ance allotments dependent on the revenue from the sale of liquor. The delegates, adopting a re port of the temperance commit tee, noted that "the extent of assistance to our aged people depends upon the amount of liquor sold, from which revenue is derived. We declare our op position to this law and pledge ourselves to do all we can to have the next legislature sep arate old age assistance from liquor revenue." The conference declared' op position to "the beverage liquor traffic in all forms," and called for a "strong and effective edu cational irogram, not merely against excessive use, but for total abstinence." CRIME DECLINES Mexico City U,R) A survey by the director ge leral of statis tics shows crime Is declining steadily in Mexico. During 1939 there were 23 420 felony cases. There were 21,318 of this type in 1942. and a compilation for the first four months of 1943 Indicat ed a total of 20,000 for the year. Meeker's office in city hall to adopt an ordinance calling for a special election at which legal voters of Medford will decide whether the city shall build a municipal swimming pool at an estimated cost of $62,500. Under the plan to finance the proposed pool, a tax levy of three mills for the next two years would be added to the budget. The ordinance was re quested in a petition sponsored by the Lions club and endorsed by 15 other local organizations representing about 3,500 persons. Hitler First On Defeat Program Curtin Convinced Canberra, Australia, June 26 (U.R) Prime Minister John Curtin returned to Australia to day after attending conferences among leaders of the British commonwealths at London and said he was convinced the basic allied global strategy still was "defeat Hitler first." "I will soon report to the cab inet," Curtin said, "several im portant decisions made during my trip to London and Wash ington which will affect the fu ture life of the world." Immediately after his arrival, Curtin conferred with Gen. Douglas MacArthur on the "war against Japan." The prime min ister said the conferences would be resumed tomorrow. "We have passed through the twilight period," he said, "and now we have a chance to finish this fight in the sixth round in stead of letting it go to 20 rounds." 87 DESCENDANTS Cleveland, O.
