Opening today at the Crater ian theater is the much-awaited film version of that perennial stage favorite, 'The Desert Song." Warner Bros., the first of the film companies to bring musicals to the screen, has ap parently outdone itself In this production. Filmed in gorneuu.. lw.lu. color, this completely modern ized version leans heavily on current history for its plot. The vivid story, told against a back ground of beauty and romance, tells of a young, itinerant musi cian, Paul Hudson, who, in the guise of El Khobar, makes dar ing and spectacular efforts to free the downtrodden Rif slave labor from the ruthless oppres sion of the Nazis. Interwoven into the plot Is the beautiful love story of Paul and the lovely Margot, a French cafe singer who loves him for his courage and unselfishness, Dennis Morgan and Irene Manning are starred as Paul and Margot, and lend new beauty to the familiar Romberg tunes in their renditions of them. In the featured cast are Bruce Cabot, Gene Lockhart andFaye Emer son. "Three Men in White," with Lionel Barrymore, Van John son and Marilyn Maxwell opens today on the Rialto s screen, with "Hi, Good Lookin'," as the com panion feature. P COUNTY HEALTH The gift of $500 from the Camp White Station Hospital of ficers' party fund to the Jackson County Public Health association was reported last week by Mrs. Elwood H e d b e r g, association presiednt. The check was for warded the association by Colo nel F. T. ChnmbrHn, head of th hospital, Mrs. Hedberg told the board In meeting at her home Wednesday. The gift was accompanied by a note, expressing appreciation of the "kindness and cooperation shown the station hospital by the health association" and the wish that the money would be of use In he splendid work of the or ganization. A citation for 25 years of con tinuous service was presented the health association at the an nual meeting of the Oregon Tu berculosis association, Mrs. Hed berg also announced, displaying the award to the board. Jackson county, the first in Oregon to be organized In public health work, completed Its 25th year in 1943, but the awards were not made until this summer, Mrs. Hedberg explained. Another appeal for blood do nors In the campaign recently launched by the health associa tion in Jackson county was voiced by Mrs. Hedberg. She stated that 70 people have vol unteered to have their blood typed and expressed willingness to give their blood in case of necessary transfusions. The health association hopes to build up a list of at least 200 vol unteers. Any pcrsoik willing to volunteer is asked to call at one of the laboratories at Community hospital, Sacred Heart hospital or the Medford Center building. Dr. A. E. Merkel, Jackson county public health officer was special guest at the luncheon session and discussed the coun ty budget with the board. Plans for a meeting of the board with community group chairmen from all sections of the county were made. The meeting will be in the form of a lunch eon at the Girls' Community club In Medford on July 19. A "scrump," according to Coast Guard academy plebes, is 110,000'h of a second. Pinkham of Central Point to his present grade from that of first lieuten ant was announced recently by the Panama Coast Artillery Command. Capt. Pinkham is commanding officer of. a harbor defense organization. Nesbick of 527 Putman street applied for a permit to construct a private garage at a stated cost of $175. To Nebraska Lt. Del Cooley, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Mead Cooley of 648 Palm St., has re ported for duty at Lincoln, Nebr., after spending a week's furlough with his parents. Lt. Cooley, who graduated June 10 from the Carlsbad Army Air field, is an aircraft observer bombardier. He is a 1941 grad uate of Medford high. On Furlough Cadet Daniel Graham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Graham of 108 Cottage St., is home on a week's furlough from West Point in New York. Graham has just completed his first year at the United States Military Academy and reports that it is "tough" but well worth it. He is a 1943 graduate of Medford high school. IRENE MANNING Singing Diriing of 'Yankee Doodle Dandy BACK THE OF A capacity house at the Cra terian theater, Friday night, gave thunderous approval to the three-act play 'The Call of Free dom." presented by members of the WPRC of Camp White and produced under direction of Cpl. Dean Nelson. With the entire theater filled with bond buyers of Jackson county, the actors played to an audience represent ing $247,525 in war bonds. The opening act, set in a living room in a typical American home, gave an insight into a sol dier's ideas on purchasing bonds. Act two, "somewhere in Italy," a few miles back from the front, showed soldiers taking a well deserved rest from combat du ties. That combat duty was not Just a thrill was effectively brought out when the resting soldiers were Joined by a raw recruit with some typical views on combat duty. Act three showed a field hos pital and emphasized the value of blood plasma, in a dramatic scene, a wounded soldier being saved by the plasma which bond purchasers had made available. The three acts were dramatic ally woven together by the nar ration In the background, which was one of the most forceful and dramatic parts of the show. Music was furnished by the SCU band of thirty pieces under direction of TSgt. John DeAn gelus. Nelson was pressed Into service, but right in the middle of his Russian comedy act the sound suddenly came to life and the screen part of the program was on its way with Betty Grable in Good Looking!
