dustrial plants near Eugene, m

ervation and treatment and a
$200,000 silica sand 'refining
plant, were announced here to
day. The wood preservation plant
will treat approximately 750,000
board feet per month, employ
ing 23 men, Frank L. Lowry,
manager, said. Construction has
already begun along the South
ern Pacific's Marshfield branch
line near Seneca station, about
20 miles west of this city.
Big timbers and piling will be
treated with creosote to with
stand tropical climates, as pro
lection against insects, and for
marine use, Lowry said. A build
ing for treating cedar poles will
also be constructed on the pro
perly. The silica plant, located about
five miles west of the city, will
be operated by Silica Products
Oregon, Ltd., of Portland to fur

has begun, C. J. Heeler, local

Ho said that tests made by the
state department of geology re
cently indicate that silica sand
in the Eugene area Is of as high

In the Point Barrow area recent
ly, geologists found a herd of
wild caribou which had been
trapped a lake ol asphalt and,
unable to get free, had starved.
