FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TJHBWNB Sunday. June IS, 1144 Society and Clubs By Olive Starcher Strangs Celebrate 25th Anniversary , At Home Reception Sunday afternoon, June 11, Mr. and Mrs. Fred L. Strang received about 100 of their friends at their home, 418 South Central avenue, in celebration of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The affair wa from three to six o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Strang were married Junj lKh, 1919, in the Church of the Incarnation (Epis copal), Washington, D. C. They came to Midford in January, 1B21, where they have lived! continuously except for eight years 3pent in Roseburg from 1922 to 1930 The Strang home was deco rated with a profusion of beau tiful flowers sent by their many friends in honor of the happy occasion, and the beautifully appointed tea table was cen tered with pink rosei and pink tapers. Miscs Mary-Lee Strang, their daughter, greeted the guests at the door and Mrs. E. O. Ran dolph was in charge of the guest book. Mr. and Mrs. Strang were assisted in receiving by Mrs. Charles Strang, mother of Mr. Independence Hall Is Presented Flag By Oregon Groups ' Of special interest to members of both the Daughters and the Suns of the American Revolu tion is the announcement by Mrs. Bert B. Lowry, atate re gent of the Daughters, that an Oregon flag was presented last Wednesday, Flag Day, to Inde pendence hall in Philadelphia. The announcement was made at a meeting of the state board of the D. A. R. held Thursday in Portland. The Oregon flag was pur chased last winter through the efforts of the two organizations. Presentation on behalf of the Oregon groups was by Mrs. R. M. Evans, former Medford resi dent now making her home in Philadelphia and a member of Crater Lake chapter. Mrs. Evans is public relations director for the Philadelphia Red Cross chapter. According to Mrs. Lowry, Oregon was one of four states which did not have flags hang ing In Independence hall. Flag Day in Medford was marked by a meeting of Crater Lake chapter of the Daughters held at the home of Mrs. R. E Strang, who was a guest at the ?"' P' ! wedding 25 years ago, Mrs. G. H. Maasdam and Mrs. C. Virgil Strang assisted and those pouring were Miss Claire Hanley, Mrs. Lulu Saulsberry of Jacksonville; Mrs. A let ha Vawter, Mrs. J. W. McCoy of Ashland; Mrs. W. A. Holloway, and Mrs. A. C. Pierce. William C. Strang, their son, of Santa Mdhlca, Calif., was un able to be here until Monday, but his wife and small son, William Curtis, were present for the celebration. During the afternoon Joanna Wyatt, Mabel Randolph, Harry A. Young and Ro'. r: C. Wright sang appropriate numbers. They were accompanied by Eva Hazel rlgg Marsh and Doris Condlt Lantz. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Orr Return Mr, and Mrs. A. E. Orr, 220 Barneburg Road, returned Fri day from Portland where Mr. Orr transacted business. covered dish luncheon was fol lowed by a business meeting with the new regent, Mrs. O. H. Brenneman, presiding. In cluded in the business was the decision to purchase a $100 war bond for the chapter dur ing the present drive. An informal program con sisted of interesting bits from the family records of the varl ous members, told by" the meirv bers themselves. Some of the stories dated to the colonial period, some were recent and some dated back as far as the sixteenth century. This meeting closed the year's activity ui.til next fall. Visitor From Altadena Is Guest of Relatives Mrs. H. J. Ramsey of Alta dena, Calif., Is in Medford to be with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Janney, Berkeley Way, and another sister-in-law, Mrs. Paul Janney, Jacksonville highway. John Court took place Friday at five o'clock at the Medford Methodist church. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. L. M. Luper, 32S East Main street and Cpl. Court's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Court, 146 South Ivy street. For her wedding the bride wore a coral colored suit with a matching feathered hat and white accessories. She carried a white Bible with a white or chid. The service was read by the Rev. Louis C. Kirby and the bride was given In marriage by her father, D. R. Luper of Al- bany, Ore. Miss Luper's maid - of - honor was Miss Nina Tuttle, who wore a blue suit with white acces sories and a corsage of rose buds. Don Woods, UEN, was best man for Cpl. Court and ushers were Sut. Milton Pitts I and Pvt. Ralph Burgess. Mrs. Luper was wearing a navy suit with matching acces sories and a corsage of rosebuds while Mrs. Court wore a light blue costume with white acces sories and a rosebud corsage. Preceding the service Miss Helen Webb sang, "Because" and "I Love You Truly." The church had been arranged with White snapdragons and green ery and was lighted with can dles in branched candelabra. The reception was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marc B. Jarmin, Corning Court, uncle and aunt of the bride. The tra ditional wedding cake was served, with the bride and groom cutting the first slice. Mrs. Loren Luper of Albany and Miss Tuttle completed the cutting and serving and the Misses Neysa Wall and Helen Webb served punch. CpL Court and his bride are on a brief wedding trip and will then go to Walla Walla, Wash., where the corporal will be sta tioned at the army air, base. Both the bride and groom are graduates of Medford high school, the bride with the class of 1943 and the groom a year earlier. Miss Luper attended the University of Oregon for one term last year. Oul-of-town guests at the wedding were Mrs. Howard Jenks, Salem; Mrs. Loren Luper and daughter, Marilyn, Albany;; Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Humphrey, Mrs. Lester Thompson and daughter, Nadine, of Dunsmuir; Mr. and Mrs. W. Miles and daughter, Yvonne and grand children, Myrna and Dorene, of Ashland. Mrs. Ef tie Kurtz ' Leaving Tonight For Zonta Meeting Leaving tonluht for Chicago is Mrs. Effle Kurtz, 204 North Ivy street. Mrs. Kurtz, vice chairman of district six, Zonta International, will attend the convention of the group to be held June 22 to 25 at the Edge water Beach hotel and during the sessions will speak on "The Music of American History." Mrs. Kurtz is a member of the international music committee of Zonta. Following the Zonta sessions Mrs. Kurtz will enroll at the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago, of which she Is an af filiated extension teacher, and will study under Guy Maier. Mr. Maicr is a member of the well known duo-piano team of Maicr and Pattison. En route home the first of August, Mrs. Kurtz will visit with friends and relatives in Enid, Okla., and Kansas City and Topcka, Kan. Also attending the conven tion from this district Is Miss Helen Yockey, Salem, new district chairman, and Mrs. Halite Huntington, Eugene, and Mrs. Cccile Cummings, Corval- lis. I A- f x. Mrs. Thompson is the former Ltona May Houston, daughter ef Mr. and Mrs. Ceorfie Hous ton, 1006 North Central avenue, and the groom Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thompson, Central Point. Mrs. Thompson is remaining in Medford while her husband is on duty with the navy. Surprise Shower Given Wednesday For Mrs. Miles Mrs. Roy J. Miles, whose mar riage was an event of May 18th, was honored at a surprise kitch en shower, Wednesday evening, June 14. Hostesses for the day were Newlywed Couple Now Residing In California City Technical Sergeant and Mrs. Clifford H. Rohlf, whose mar riage was a recent event here, have taken up residence at 20S Crandall Way, San Luis Obispo, Calif. Mrs. Rohlf Is the former Phyllis Lorraine eleven, young er daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sigurd eleven of 1014 West Ninth street, and Sgt. Rohlf is the son of Mrs. Anna Rohlf of Duluth, Minn. The wedding took place the evening of May 31 at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. James Matthew Alley, 1411 Palm street, with the Rev, Alley performing the rites at eight o'clock. The bride wore a white dressmaker suit and her flowers were a corsage of fuchsia col red rose buds. Her accessories were all white and her hat, halo-styled with veil, was fashioned en tirely of white petals. The matron-of-honor, Mrs. w. A. Winn, wore a military blue suit with a corsage of white gardenias. Sgt. W. A. Winn was best man for the groom. Mrs. Rohlf graduated from Medford senior high school with the class of 1942 and prior to her marriage 'as em. oyed at Camp White as a stenographer. Sgt. Rohlf Is serving with a unit of the army medical corps. . ' Lady Lions Club Elects Officers At Last Meeting Mrs. Clifford Proctor Is the newly electld president of the Lady Lions club, having been Stanley-Kennedy Rites Announced To Friends Here Mr. and Mis. E. Blaine Stan ley of Vaucouver, Wash., have announced the marriage of their daughter, Marcla Marilyn, to Hilary Lubon Kennedy, also of Vancouver, The ceremony took place May 24 at All Saint's Episcopal church, Portland. The Stanley family formerly resided In Medford, leaving for Vancouver two years ago and have many friends here. Miss Stanley remained in Medford, residing at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Herald Gardner in or der to complete her course at Medford senior high school. She was a prominent member of the graduating class of 1943. Mr. Kennedy is employed at the Kaiser shipyards in Van couver. He and Mrs. Kennedy are residing in vancouver. Surprise Shower Given Wednesday At Sanden Home ' Mrs. Dale McMullin was hon ored with a surprise shower party given Wednesday after noon by members of the Jack sonville Missionary society. The affair' was at the home of Mrs. McMulltn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Sanden, 304 South Central avenue, Medford. The honored guest was pre sented with a variety of lovely gifts and the remainder of the afternoon was spent with games. Refreshments were served. Parker was elected president of the Med ford American Legion 'uxiliary, Unit No. 15, during a business meeting held Wednesday at the armory. She succeeds Mrs H. L. Alford who has served as chairman of the group the past year. Mrs. Thomas Freed was elect ed first vice-president; Mrs. Har ry R. Ingling, second vice-president; Mrs. Earl York, recretary; Mrs. Nettie Ellei.burg, treasur er; Mrs. F. E. Martin and Mrs. Leo Williams, serteants-.-t-arms. Elected to the executive com mittee were Mrs. Belva Aiken, Mrs. H. L. Alford and Mrs. Fred Strang. Four members, Mrs. Parker, Mrs. ullenburg, Mrs. York and Mrs. Freed, were elected delegates to the state convention which will be held In August. Wrights Honored At Dinner Party Friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. John Wright of Phoe nix gathered at the Wright home last Sunday for a fare well lawn and dinner party honoring the couple, who are planning to leave the first of August for Portland to be with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Val Chaney, for a year. Included In the guests were nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Monk Clark of Ashland, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clark and daughter Marie of Eagle Point, Mrs Jesse Glass of Brownsboro, ilrs. The ceremonies, conducted by Mrs. Gertrude Ottinjcr, member of the county committee, follow ed a picnic luncheon. Mrs. Winifred Mason was in stalled chairman; Mrs. Isabel Le Vander. vice-chairman; Mrs. Edna Holdridge, secretary and treasurer; Mrs. Anna Clark, librarian. Corsages were present ed to each officer. During the meeting an Inter esting discussion on youth ac tivities was held. Officers state that the unit is planning an in teresting and helpful program for this coming year and all women of the district are invited to join the group. , Miss Nanette Holmes Leaves For San Francisco Miss Nanette Holmes left last week for San Francisco after spending several days in Med ford with her father, David Holmes. In San Francisco she will be with her mother, Mrs. Kinney Holmes, who recently left Medford to reside In the California city. Miss Holmes Just completed her second year at the University of Oregon. wsu named vice-president, Mrs. Frank Cullen, secretary, and Mrs. N. D. Rowe, treasurer. A Joint installation of officers will be held with the Lions' ub, the ceremonies to be July 6 at Chalkers Motel. Danenhower Married June 10 The marriage of Miss Cecily Ann Taylor to Lt. Harold Sou der Danenhower has been an nounced by Mrs. Nell Taylor, 11 Modoc avenue, Medford, mother of the bride. Lt. Harry W. Han sen, pastor, reading the service. Harklns Family Leaves Friday For California Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Harklns, their two daughters and Mr. Harklns sister, Miss Fleta Har kins, left Friday morning for Santa Barbara where they will spend the next two months. At that time the family plans to take up permanent residence in Visalia, Calif. The Harkins have resided here for more than two years, Mr. Harkins having been associated with the Alley Broth ers Lumber company.
