WISEACRE IN I am arthritic and recently sent for your booklet "The Rheu matic Ills" writes Mrs. Wiseacre, devising her own title for my booklet, perhaps as a gentle rebuke to me for the title I gave it "The Ills Called Rheu- m a t i s m". It was interesting but . . . tried to find a Doctor who gives the Or. Brad vitamin D treatment you described.. I made appointments with two doctors and found neither used the method ... One doctor wanted to remove my tonsils, The second said that was unnecessary and wanted to give me salicylates. They were both reputable men. (Yea, and both true to form in regard to the tonsils.) Can you tell me how to find a Dr. here in who gives the vitamin D treatment? Also, do you believe the tak ing of such products as........ vita min and mineral foods or .......... products without a Dr. s advice is safe? The . products are manufactured by chemists. I have talked with a nutritionist of the company, but she cannot tell me where I can read up on the quality or effectiveness of the products, except for her own literature. How should I go about getting information on such products? , (Signed (, In my personal reply I told the correspondent I feared she was taking a wrong course. I advised her to choose a doctor, describe her complaint to the doctor in her own words (say lameness, pain, stiffness in this joint or that region, not "arthritis", for instance) and leave it entirely to the doctor to make his own diag nosis and prescribe or apply the treatment the doctor deems ad visable or "indicated". I advised her that it is much better to leave to the doctor the prescrip tion of any vitamins or minerals if such supplements are "indi cated". JEEP SHOP.OPENS ATI Junior Red Cross Jeep Shop opens Monday at 9 a. m. in the Junior high school and will be open Monday, Tuesday. Wednes day, Thursday and Friday morn ings from 9 to noon until the middle of August. Both boys and girls are .wel come. Mrs. James Medley, cap tain of the Jeep Crews, will be in charge. Mrs. William Cooney, with Miss Vera Humphrey, chair man of Junior Red Cross, have been concerned with lumber, patterns and models for the past week as output of the shop will be mainly in wood work. Chief project of the shop will be production of miniature game kits, nine games to fit into a box to be sent to prisoners of war camps to our own prisoners overseas. Hospital bed tables, lap boards, recreation games for day rooms, are on the summer quota also. Since more of the armed forces than ever before are over seas, the Juniors will make Christmas tree decorations and tray favors for both able-bodied men, for their Christmas mess halls, and for hospitals on both fronts. Parents are urged to help the children to accomplish this by helping in the shop where many mothers are needed daily for su pervision and in making it pos sible for the children to volun teer so many work hours a week in the Jeep Shops. Each Jeep should bring his own pencil, a magazine, paints if possible, crayons, an empty clean can and a fruit jar to make ash trays and flower vases with, and Christmas cards, tinsel, col ored paper, sand paper, rulers or large posters, paste or rib bons and string. Miss Humphrey announces that the headquarters shop will be open daily from noon until five o'clock and all day Satur day. The Hobby Shop will open again July 1 on the east side. Not that I know as much as a Wise acre, being just a plodding coun try doctor who never made the front page except by sheer acci dent, but when I consult a doc tor even if he prescribes a beak er of castor oil or a basal meto bolism measurement or plate of mashed potato I do not boggle and you know how I despise all of these things but take my medicine like a good little boy. If I didn't give the doctor that much confidence I'd be a ninny hammer to consult him in the first place. E I Grants Pass, June 17 U.R) Construction of a trans-Cascade highway and a road from the southern Oregon coast to the in terior after the war was asked Thursday in a resolution by the Oregon State Grange. The trans-Cascade highway would follow the Clackamas river and Oak Grove fork, cut ting from Estacada to Madras. The road to the coast would con nect Grants Pass and Medford with the Coast highway, the route following Rogue river most of the distance. The Grange also went on rec ord against food price subsidies. Closing Its five-day session, the Grange elected C. -H. Brooks, Josephine county Pomona, presi dent of the Pomona Masters as sociation. Approxim ately $70,000 worth of war bonds were sold Thursday night at a bond rally in front of the local Honor Roll board in downtown Ashland. Preceded by a 30-min-ute band concert, the rally was attended by a large crowd de spite inclement weather. Ashland Elks, Lodge sponsored the gath ering. City Attorney William M. Briggs introduced Carlos Morris of Medford who acted as master of ceremonies.
