Mrs. Chirgwin is Mr. Mor T doff's sister. Mr. Mordoff is al so visiting with his brother, Myron G. Mordoff, and family while in the valley. ... To Florida A. V. Hardy, for several years a member of the Frideger Wholesale Grocery in Ashland and a resident of Med ford, announced yesterday that he had severed connections with the firm and that he and Mrs. Hardy plan to leave im mediately for Pensacola, Fla., where they will live. The Hardy borne is at 516 S. Ivy street. Strode Transferred Cpl. Wil liam M. Strode, who has been stationed at Camp Van Dorn, Miss., for the past eight months, has been transferred to Ft. Geo. Meade, Md., and is expecting overseas duty soon, according to information received here. .Mrs. Strode has spent the past Several months in Mississippi, and is now visiting at the home of her aunt, Mrs. A. J. Zimmer man in Jamestown, Kansas, for several weeks. Mrs. Zimmer man spent the summer here three years ago, visiting rela tives. The Strode home is at 824 Haven street. Ninth Bombardment Squadron who had been stationed in India for the past 18 months, was a re cent visitor here at the home of his uncle, W. R. Holman and family, 1211 West Main street. Lowry, Jr., of Portland, for a brief visit in the city. Lowry, a foreman at the Alblna Shipyards, was in Medford for a fortnight on busi ness. Ga East Mrs. M. A. Swartr and children left last evening for Portland with Mrs. Swartz' brother, Martin Maddon, and family to visit for a week. The Maddens have been in Medford the past week visiting. ATTEND CANNING More than 250 Medford homemakers filled the court house auditorium to capacity yesterday to hear Mrs. Vivian Freeman, canning specialist of the Kerr Mason Jar Company and Miss Marian Farrell, home demonstration agent, give point ers on home food preservation. Mrs. H. O. Colburn, chairman of the Jackson County Nutrition Council, sponsoring agency for the series of demonstrations, in troduced Mrs. Freeman: The audience was most en thusiastic in its response to the more recent innovations in can ning methods. Mrs. Freeman demonstrated the hot pack method of canning fruit, espe cially adapted to peaches, pears, , and- other large fruits that ox- i idize readily for it helps to re tain the original color of the ' fruit and makes possible a I sweeter tasting product, using less sugar than usually thought necessary.. Mrs. Freeman re-1 ports that she has had 1243 men, women and children make a taste test of fruit canned by various methods and that 97 per cent of them prefer the fla vor and texture of this hot packed fruit. Other food preserved at the meeting Included tomatoes to demonstrate the cold pack, hot water bath method and beets to illustrate use of the pressure cooker on non-acid vegetables that require higher temperature for proper sterilization. Mrs. Freeman emphasized the Importance of having at least one inch of water above jars in the hot water canner to assure proper penetration of heat and sealing of jars. Miss Farrell discussed prep aration of fruits, vegetables and fowl for the cold storage lockers and urged each person who uses the method to follow reliable Instructions which are available free of charge through the county Extension office. Mrs. Freeman and Miss Far rell, and the County Nutrition Council expressed their appre ciation to local business organ izations who assisted in promot ing the program. Mrs. Freeman added, "The homemakers of Jackson county have shown that they are 100 per cent behind the eftorts to strengthen the home front by preserving food at home to al low commercial pack for army and lend lease uses." Naw nhom COOL WEATHER AIDS WATER CONSERVATION The present spell of cool weather is beneficial to crops and irrigation prospects for late summer and early fall, Water master Clinton Smith reports. He further states a good rain now, and another, as usually comes In mid-August, will lessen moisture worries at the end of the season. The current brand of weather is also conserving water in reservoirs by lessening I evaporation, keeping the ground moist, and maintaining the stream flow. Watermaster Smith says farmers in his area have a cheerful view over crop pros pects, and that the agricultural value outlook is good. OBITUARY FRED C. SHULER Private services for Fred C.
