Newspaper Page TextIS OF LEGION POST , At a well attended meeting of Medford Post American Legion last night, Harry Young was elected commander for the en suing year with Albert Fiora and Hugh McKenzie as first vice and second vice command ers respectively. A. J. Ander son was elected chaplain and Charles Wiley adjutant. Elected to the executive com mittee were Robert F. Kyle. J. E. .Russell, Walter Looker, Carl Y. Tengwald and John Avery. Walter Reinking as junior past commander is automatically on the executive committee with out balloting. Delegates to the Legion con vention in Portland August 10, 11 and 12 were chosen as fol lows: Walter Reinking, Fred Strang, J. E. Russell and Dick H. Baize; alternates, Walter Looker, Fred Scheffel, John Avery, Hugh McKenzie, Carl Tengwald and Lester Mathes. Charles Wiley adjutant, and Dick Baize, convention dele gate, are World War No. 2 veterans. OF. RTE 3 DIES William Monroe Martin, 53, of Route 3, passed away at a local hospital early Thursday. Survivors include the wife and two sons, Lawrence Howard Martin who is with the Merchant Marine and Lou Leland Martin with the Army Air Force stationed in India, one grandchild, Patricia. A sister, Mrs. W. S. Sweet, of Klamath Falls, also a brother, C. E. Martin, of Venita, Ore. Mr. Martin had been em ployed at the Medford Corpora tion for the past 18 years, and leaves a host of friends to mourn his passing. - .. Funeral services will be con ducted from Perl Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p. m.,. the Rev. W. A. Dawes, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating. Inter ment will be in Siskiyou Memo rial Park. Boston, June 13. U. The first appearance of a German submarine off the north Atlantic fishing banks in two years was disclosed officially today with the arrival in port of a fishing trawler crippled by gunfire. There were no casualties. During a press interview held with the27-man crew, the" first naval district said it was the first time in two years a Ger man submarine had been sight ed off the northeastern fishing banks. The line-trawler Lark was subjected to seven salvos from a deck cannon arid then rakedl with machinegun fire, Capt. James L. Abbott, 35, Dorchester, Mass., said. The submarine raised from the sea while his ship was being mored from ore fishing ground to another. There was a full moon. Capt. Abbott was in the pilot house and saw it on the star board quarter. "I summoned all the men who were sleeping and they came tumbling up on deck," he said. The crew execpt for Captr Ab bott and the cook abandoned the trawler at once. The submarine then sprayed her with machine gun bullets and moved swif'ly away. A short time later the sub marine again swung into view and started to shell my h!p," Abbott said. "It was only about 100 feet away at the time." The shelling continued for about 15 minutes. JACKSON CO. DEMOCRATS TO HEAR LEW WALLACE Lew Wallace of Portland, na tional Democratic committeeman for Oregon, will give the main address 'at the biennial Demo cratic county convention of all precinct members in the .Hotel Medford June 22 at 8 p. m., it was announced by V. BLACKMARKET GASOLINE RING CLAIMED BROKEN Las Vegas, Nev.,' June 15 (U.PJ A blackmarket gasoline ring which allegedly operated in southern Nevada and southern California was smashed with the arrest here of a man and his wife, Las Vegas police said to day. Mrs. Emil Van Sant, part time worker at the basic magnesium ration board and her unemploy ed husband were taken Into cus tody and arraigned before U. S. Commissioner A, G. Blad. TO BE INTERNED London, June 15 U.P.) The status of a group of civilian women caught sniping at allied soldiers in France was settled today by a government order directing that they be interned as enemy aliens. A home office spokesman said enemy women captured in uni form would be treated as prison ers of war, but others taken by the allied troops would be in terned. The first woman captive, Myra, a 29-year-old Pole accused of sniping, probably will be sent to the Isle of Man . where many other enemy aliens are being held, the spokesman said. SILVER FOR INDIA Washington, June 15 (U.R) The treasury announced today that the United States has con cluded a special lend lease agreement to provide India with 100,000,000 ounces of sil ver for war purposes. DROWN IN PARK Berkeley, Cal., June 15 (U.R) Two San Francisco high school youths drowned and an other boy and three girls were rescued yesterday when they attempted to change from one boat to another in Lake Anza in Tilden Regional Park.
