TWELVE MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, June 15. 1944 TAFT MAY HEAD E Gains Support In Recent Weeks; Leaders Of Both Parties Reaching Chicago Chicago, June 15 (U.FD Sen. Robert A. Taft, of Ohio, may be selected chairman of the highly Important resolutions commit tee,, which drafts the platform for the republican national con vention opening here June 26, without opposition next week, party leaders Indicated in off-the-record talks today. Taft, who is serving his first term in the senate, has gained added support for the chairman ship in recent weeks, GOP lead ers said, and already has the backing of Gov. John W. Back er's supporters. Has Dewey Backing In addition, it was believed! that Talf also had gained the confidence of Gov. Thomas E. ' Dewey's supporters. Both democratic and republi can leaders have begun arriving In Chicago for Important pre convention conferences and the democratic committee on ar rangements will hold its Initial meeting tomorrow. Democratic National Chair man Robert E. Hannegan will call this first meeting to pick a keynote speaker und permanent chairman and to fill other ad ministrative offices. Gov. Robert S. Kerr of Okla homa, one of the leading candi dates for keynoter, will attend the meeting of the committee, Sergeants-At .Armi Nineteen republican congress men have been named as acting sergeants-at-arms and will help keep the records of delegates' votes and in the parliamentary procedure of the convention. J. Russell sprague of New , York, one of the principal Dewey backers, will arrive Sat urday to open headquarters for the New York governor. Mrs. Ruth Hanna McCormlck Slmms, New Mexico, already has opened an unofficial headquar ters for Dewey supporters, while Brlcker supporters have had space at the Stevens hotel for some time. TALENT BOY HAS News of a Yank's difficulty In mastering problems of English money, expressions and customs (I came recently in the form of a letter written to a Medford friend by Pvt. Edward L. Wal ters, former Mail Tribune carrier now stationed "somewhere in England" with an American in fantry unit. A graduate of Talent high school, Walters Is the son I of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Walters j cf R-ute 1, Central Point. Walters writes that England Is a "very pretty country with many old and historical build ings and castles. Sheep and cattle graze on the countryside fields, making a beautiful setting." Stationery Is hard to obtain, the local boy says, but mail from home is always welcome to the i soldiers. He continues, "The thing that looked the queerest at first to us is the fact that they drive on the left side of the road. English money was our biggest problem, most of us have it figured out; now but this pounds, crowns, shillings, etc., was sure a mystery at first. "The English people seem quite friendly and treat us well. They ore a little hard to under stand unless they talk slowly. They use a lot of different names than we do such as pubs, bobbies, j petrol and others. Johnson Brothers Meet By Chance In South Pacific', Of the 150 million bushels of apples ordinarily grown each year In the United States, at least 20 million never reach the processing plant or the open market, and are largely left in the orchard to waste. , Two Jacksonville brothers,' Pvt. Simon and Pvt. Arthur- Johnson, recently had a surprise meeting at an army camp in a ' South Pacific Island, the twoj servicemen meeting by chance as they both walked on the camp grounds. Neither brother knew that the other had been as-1 signed to the Island, an exchange, or information showing their camps to be but a quarter of a mile apart. In letters to their mother, Mrs. R. A. Johnson of Jacksonville the brothers told of the surnrlse i meeting. Two other brothers are 1 1 also In the service. Sgt. William; Johnson is stationed in England j and Sgt. Carl Jensen Is stationed in Kansas, Both Simon and Arthur John son participated in the Marshall ( islands battles, and Simon holds a Purple Heart medal awarded for wounds received In thei Aleutian islands.
