June 8. 1944 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN NO NAZIS SEEN BY FIRST WAVE Member Of Demolition Team Says Landing Only Min ute After Bombardment. By Harold Whitman Repiesenting the Combined American Press An Invasion Port, England, June 7 (U.R) Assault troops of the first jnvasion wave which hit the beach near Cherbough did not see a single Germnn dur ing their first hour of demolition work, one of the first wounded evacuees said upon reaching this port early today. The story of that beachhead was told by Corp. Johnny Lacog nata, 22, of Brooklyn, N. Y., who suffered only a slight fracture of the right wrist and will be all right in a few days. In First Wave Johnny hit the beach with the first wave as part of a demo lition team of 22 cenbat engin eers carrying explosives to de stroy a concrete barricade so that an allied tank column could charge through. They had been carefully Lriefed in advance as to the precise location of the bar ricade and how they could reach it. "We crossed the channel In an assault transport and were put overside In a Higgins boat for a 10-mile run to the beach," John ny said. "I was scared as hell on the transnort. but once we got into the little landing craft and start ed chueolng beachward I forgot all fear. We were all soaking wet and almost seasick. As I saw the beach loom up ahead I was so damned mad I just wanted to get In there and fight like hell." Johnny and his buddies said the bombardment which pre ceded them was so perfectly timed that the Hielns boats reached the beach within a min ute after the hist bomb fell. The beach was still wreathed with smoke as thev chareed ahore, Target Easily Found "Our engineer team," Johnny said, "found the wall we were to demolish as easily as If we had rehearsed the whole show on this very beach. It was so wonderful to have the whole thing explained to us In advance and then find It exactly as they said It would be. We planted our charge and blasted hell out of the wall without losing a single one of our men. Then, zing a shell came over and exploded nearby. A hunk of shrannel smacked my right hand and "well, I guess my part of the show was over. I was ordered back to the Higgins boat for evacuation." It wa Johnny's first taste of action, although he had served In Africa. "I sure thought It would be touThcr than that," he said. The transport which evacuated Johnny brought the first large load of evacuees back to this port. On board were the sur vivors of a destroyer sunk by the enemy. Margmine Equal To Butter, Claim Washington. June 8 0J.R Witnesses favoring a bill by Sen. Ellison D. Smith, D , S. C, to re move the federal oleomargarine tax. told a senate agriculture sub committee today that margarine products are equal to butter in nutritive value. Dr. Anton J. Lt. Raymond Ross Wins Silver Star in South Pacific First Lt. Raymond H. Ross. serving with an infantry unit in the south Pacific, was award ed the Silver Star for gallantry in action according to an an nouncement from his headquar ters. The award, made May 25, was made for gallantry in ac tion at Bougainville, Solomon islands, on Jan. 1, when "under intense machinegjn and rifle fire, Lt. Ross- crawled forward 20 yards to a helplessly wound ed man and dragged him to a defiladed position where he could be given prompt medical treatment and be safely evac uated." Lt. With Cleaver San Francisco, June 8 (U.PJ Harry Hiroshi Kawal, 25, In ternee at the Tule Lake segrega tion center, was held by Modoc county authorities today on charges of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly at tacked a soldier at the center with a large meat cleaver last night, the War Relocation Au- tnority announced. WRA spokesmen said the un identified soldier was struck a glancing blow with the blunt side of the cleaver which bad a blade six by five Inches.
