the M.E.'s started down. .He was
heading for another bomber, and
apparently didn t see the first
M E. when it started after him.
It was my first combat; but 1
knew In a spilt second that If
I could get on the M.E.'a tail,
I could bring him down before
he got Raddln. I stild to myself,
'I'll mousetrap that guy let him
pass me, and then bottle him
between me and Raddln.'
Big Shot Victim
"So I feinted at a bomber;
and when the M.E. swooped past
after Raddln, I swung over and
around and bora down on the
M.E.'a tall. I shot him down in
a hurry, when they pulled this
dead German out of the wreck
age later, he proved to be a
lieutenant colonel veteran of
much combat, who had earned
the Iron Cross back in 1939. It
wa. Ironic that this iron crosser
should be shot down by a novice
in his first combat a novice
lucky enough to have had foot
ball training.
Scholl, who threw the his
toric "fifth down" pass on which
Cornell beat Dartmouth In 1940,
is stationed temporarily at the
army air force redistribution
center, Atlantic City, after
year of flying In the Mediter
ranean area. He went on 73
missions and had 220 combat
hours.

championship as his booming

York, capping one of his best

passed the 100 mark in runs
driven In for the fifth time in

Roy Cullenbtn of Cleveland
walked on 98 occasions. Keller's
106 was considerably lower
than Williams' 145 the previous
year.
Dubious Honor
To Mickey Vernon, Washing
ton first baseman, went the
somewhat dubious honor of be
ing hit by more pitched balls
than any other player In the
league, Vernon wa thumped 10
time while Frank Crosettl, New
York (eadoff man and leader in
that department for several
years, tied for second with Joe
Kuhel, Chicago, both catching
bumps seven time. '
Chet Laabs of the Brown
struck out more than any other
player, whiffing 108 times. The
only other player to fan more
than 100 times was Joe Hoover,
Detroit shortstop, with 101

coroner' Jury said today that the
death of Al Rea sonar, 23-year-old
Negro lightweight fighter,
who was injured In a bout Mon
day, wat accidental. -
Reasoner died Tuesday after
hi tight with Fred Dawson was
stopped In the 10th round when
Reasoner, a Chicago youth who
came up through the CYO ranks,
collapsed on the ropes.

Plastic Surgery Is Aid To
Hurt Fliers In Come-Back

Men who have lost their eye-1
lids and weep constantly as a
result stop crying here; they're
fitted with brand-new Ud made
from' the inside akin of their
arm.
Miracle of plastic surgery
are taking place in this remote
English village under the di
rection of New Zealander, Dr.
Archibald H. Mclndoe, who
spent 10 years studying at the
Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minn
More than 7,000 operations have
been performed since the hos
pital wa opened four years ago.
Americans, through the British
War Relief society, have iust
contributed $120,000 to build a
new operating clinic. At the
moment operations are carried
out la the draughty children's
ward.
Most of the patient here are
men who've looked in the glass
and said, "I'll never be able to
work again or marry. I won't
even be able to face other peo
ple." '
Yet. after one or two opera
tions they are amazed to find
that they have enough confi
dence to go, always with an
other patient, to a factory,
where they work in pairs.
Some, awaiting further surgery,
may have wire cages on the
lower half of their faces In
stead of Jaw. They may be
facing 28 more operations ex
tending over two years. Yet
many nave been offered post
war Jobs by the factory man
agement.
I fumbled for word when I
taw the bandaged face of ah
American Fortress pilot, but he
was cheerful.
"You should see the colored
photographs taken when I ar
rived," he grinned. "I look a
lot better now."
Fliers with grean han,ds
green from burnt with blis
tered blackened faces, are glv
en new skin. Half a missing
hand la made out of thick skin
from the stomach, a part of the
body which has a good blood
supply. New eyebrows are made
from a patient's hair. Noses
come from hips, because the hip
it easy to get at and the skin
easily carved. This hospital
owes a great deal to an Amer
ican physician. Dr. E. C. Pad
gett, Kansas City, Mo., who in
vented a akin-removing machine
which slices flesh thinner than
tissue paper.
Men go about town here In all
stages of plastic surgery. Yet no
body stares. This quaint old vil
lage Is in the front line of the
war; the Battle of Britain was
