R. Mathews per formed the wedding ceremony in his office that same after- Announce Program Children A of the First Christian church " Bible school will present the annual Christmas program to morrow, Dec. 23, at 7:30 p. m. at the church. The nursery, beginners, primary and Junior departments will participate and following the program there will be Christmas treats for all the children. ' To Give Pageant The an nual Christmas program and pageant of the Roosevelt school will be given by the students tomorrow, Dec. 23, at 1:30 p.m. it was stated today. Following the program members of the Roosevelt Parent-Teacher asso ciation will provide each stu . dent with a Christmas treat and the students will then re turn to their own rooms for ( exchange of presents. Since the i parent -Teacher association is ' not having a regular December meeting, all mothers were urged to attend the pageant. Powell has been transferred from North Camp Hood, Tex., to Iowa State college at Ames, la., for ASTP training In engi neering. Pvt. Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman'D. In Jail Vernon Axel Bran- stedt, 24, was arrested in a local hotel early this morning on a charge of drunkenness, and is being held in the city Jail pend ing trial. Etta Polecat, 27, is also being held in jail on a charge of drunk and disorderly conduct. She was arrested in a local cafe this morning. . ... Purse Lost Mrs. Lester E. Ulstad, 560 Siskiyou Blvd., Ash land, reported to city police that her daughter, Pauline, lost a purse in Medford Saturday. It is described as a small green leather purse containing a black and gold Shaffer pen and pencil set, $10 bill and $1.50 change, and Mr. Ulstad's number 3 ra tion book. . . Minor Accidents C J. Mon tag of Portland and E. J. Davi son of Grants Pass operated machines involves in a minor accident on Highway 99 Wed nesday, a filed report stated today. Both the Montag sedan and the Davison truck were traveling south on the highway. Mr. Montag had slackened speed to make a turn into his drive way when the truck ploughed into the rear of his car. Iva V. McHenry of 28 N. Orange street and Bardett Sullivan of Phoe nix drove cars involved in -a minor mishap at the intersec tion of Bartlett and Fifth streets yesterday, according to a report on file. A 1941 International truck owned by Sonoma Valley Cheese Factory of Central Point and operated by J. .T. Groves of GranU Pass and a 1937 Chev rolet pickup owned by Swift and Co. and driven by Ray Archer were Involved in an accident on Highway 99, In Josephine county, yesterday, an other report states. Both trucks were going north on the high way. Another truck owned by Sonoma Valley Cheese Factory and driven by Roy Green, Rt. 1, Box S13, and a car driven by W. L. Stewart. 122 W. Main street, collided on Highway 99, a report on file says. ... Cars Ransacked Frances Flinn, 604 W. Main street, a staff worker at Riverside USO, reported to city police yester day that her car was ransacked Monday - evening as it was parked on N. Riverside avenue. Car tools and a pair of gloves' were stolen. Harry Turner, 540 Austin street, reported today that a beveled glass mirror, size 13 by 21 inches, was stol en from his- Chevrolet pickup parked on S. Front street Mon day afternoon. Also missing are a smoothing plana and block plane. INTER-UNION FEUD SEEN IN ATTACK ON LEADER San Francisco, Dec. 22 (U.R) The acid thrown into the face of Victor Swanson, 60, prominent- labor leader, by two un known assailants, may cost him his sight, his physician disclosed today. Swanson, who also suffered head injuries and add bums on his chest and legs as well as face, at first denied he was in volved in "union trouble," but Jater told investigators he be lieved the attack was the result of a jurisdictional dispute. NEWSMAN KILLED 'Hollywood, Dec. 22 (U.R) Terry J. Delapp, 39, film studio publicity, director and former Los Angeles newsman, was killed early today when struck by an automobile in front of a Hollywood restaurant. The University, of Oregon was established at Eugene in 1872. FOR YULE PARTY Medford firemen and their families met at the fire hall last night for the annual firemen's Christmas party with dinner, program, and tree for the chil dren. Twenty-eight adults and 13 youngsters attended the af fair. Fire Chief Roy Elliott acted as toastmaster, introducing As sistant Fire Chief Ed Canoose who spoke on the civilian de fense program and equipment provided in this area. Le Roy Williams of the fire department, chairman of the entertainment committee, presented three boys, Lloyd Heath, Robert Lee Fisher and Roger Hogstrom, who play ed several accordion pieces. Fol lowing the program, gifts were distributed to the children. Guests included Mrs. F. A. Johnston of Gridley, Kansas, a sister of Chief Elliott; Clyde Deatherage, Mr. and Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Hogstrom, parents of the yourig accordion players: Mrs. Gordon Barker, wife of Ban Advertising For Nine Days to Conserve Paper Chicago, Dec. 22. (U.R) The Chicago Daily News an nounced today that nearly all advertising will be omitted from the paper between to morrow and Jan. 3, because of the shortage of newsprint Only death and legal notices, church bulletins, and amuse ment announcements will be printed during that period, the newspaper announced. During the time which It will appear without tH bulk of its advertising, "the Daily News will appear as usual with all its editorial features and news section unabridged," the announcement said. FINTON TO ENTER PLEA IN CRUELTY Earl Flnton, Prospect district mlllworker, charged with cruel ty to a child not his own, re- talned Attorney ueorge A. woo ding as counsel yesterday, and will enter a plea in justice court this afternoon, a second delay in pleading being granted yes terday. Attorney Codding and District Attorney Neilson will confer on what procedure' will be taken In the court. The Justice court has no Jurisdiction, and the case will either be referred to the grand jury or certified to the juvenile court. The boy involved Is the six-year-old nephew of Flnton's wife, who has been living with them, and attending the Pros pect school. The case was investigated by County Juvenile Officer Robert M. Elder, who found the boy bad been severely beaten. IRON LUNG BABY IS NAMED FOR FATHER Portiand, Ore., Dec. 22 (U.R) The baby in Oregon's first iron lung maternity case was to day named Marvin James Wil son Jr., for his father who flew halt way around the world in an army bomber from India to be present at his birth in a Portland hospital. Cel. Wilson made the an nouncement for his 20-year old wife, who has been confined to the respirator as an infantile paralysis patient.
