Staats, Jr., seaman first class, arrived in Medford this morning with his wife and small daughter, Joyce, to visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert J. Staats, Sr., 113 Willamette avenue. Staats is stationed at Gulfport, Miss., and Mrs. Staats and their daughter have been living In Baker. They will re main here until after Christmas. e Purse Ransacked Mrs. Sebas- ta Apollo, 29 Quince street. reported to city police this morning that someone had en tered the Apollo house last night during their absence, and had removed her purse from a table. Contents Included about $40 cash, ration books, and various other items. A short time later Mr. Apollo reported that the purse was found In the yard minus the money but with all other contents unharmed. Dorsey Coming Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Dorsey, 1247 Saling avenue, received a telegram this morning from their son, Alvey, stating that he will arrive home Saturday. The young man has been overseas in England for V some time, and has been con 9 fined , to a hospital since last February. He was transferred back to the United States last month and has been a patient In hospitals in New York and Texas before coming home. Son Unhurt In a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. R. Womack, 845 West Second St., and dated Nov. 28, Pfc. Ross E. Womack of the marine corps states that he had come through ' the battle of Tarawa Island without a scratch. He said that "this battle was really tough" and that the Japs fought to the last man. Pfc. womack was born and raised in Wallowa, Ore, and enlisted in the marine corps In February of 1942. His parents have resided in Medford since last April. Students Home Among the young women home from unt versities and colleges for the Christmas vacations are Miss Joyce Utz. Miss Mary Lou Ly man, Miss Natalie Parker, Miss Clara Daniels and Miss Lois Ann Hubbard. Miss Utz is home from the University of Oregon at Eugene, Miss Lyman and Miss Parker arrived home Saturday from Portland where they at tend Reed College, and Miss Daniels and Miss Hubbard are students at Mills College at Oak' land, Calif. Mace Enlisis Willard Frances Mace of 458 Haven St., has en listed in the new navy ship repair unit according to Hemm ing Specialist H. W. Crain. Mace was sworn into the service Dec. Gusts son, 108 S. Holly street, until after Christmas. Sgt. Gustafson is on convalescent leave from the marine corps, having spent the past year and a half in' the south Pacific area. He reports back to his base for duty Dec. 30. Mrs. Gustafson has made her home in San Diego during his- absence. Minor Mishap A 1938 Ford passenger car driven by Lois Frazer Bergman, 1510 W. Main street and a 1928 Chrysler oper ated by Adolph schulz. Star Rt. Box 42, were Involved in minor accident on N. Ivy street at the intersection of W. Fifth street Sunday evening, a report on file stated today. The Berg man machine was travelling east on Sixth street, and the Schulz car was going north on Ivy street. RIEBEL 13 PRISONER Grants Pass, Dec. 21 First word of the whereabouts of Chester A. (Chet) Rlebel, well known Grants Pass restaurateur and sportsman, came to Mrs Riebel Friday from the navy department, who notified her that her husband is a prisoner of war at the Fukuoka prisoner camp, Island of Honsyu, Japan. Gies of Camp White, living at Utopia Camp, reported Monday that while his Buick coupe was parked on East Eighth street between Cen tral avenue and Bartlett street. someone had stolen an Argus camera from the automobile. A gas ration book was taken from a 1939 Mercury sedan owned by W. H. Keml, 707 West Jackson boulevard Monday, as It was parked on North Central avenue near Sixth street ' Frank P. Farrell, room 808, Fluhrer building, also reported loss of his A gas ration book, stating that it was stolen from his Ford roadster parked down town. Merkel, county health officer, states this is probably only small portion of the total cases.
