(U.R) A strong British patrol crossed- the Garigliano river at a twin bridge northwest of Mount Maggiore during the night, killed or wounded -40 Germans, and came back with one man wounded, their only casualty. The patrol made the crossing with the stealth of American Indian warriors, keeping In the shadows cast by brilliant moon and bypassing German sentinels. At each farmhouse In which were sleeping Germans, the British left behind a number of men armed with grenades and tommy guns. All At Once After mannin; nearly a dozen houses, the patrol let go with gun and grenade, killing most of the Germans and mowing aown tnese who tried to flee. The patrol first crossed the twin bridge silently, one by one, crawling to take advantage of the shadows. . The first group posted at a farmhouse had nearly half an hour to waif be fore the pre-arranged zero hour when "all hell broke loose." Taken by surprise, the Ger mans nevertheless tried to cut off the patrol by sending guards to the bridge. But the British fought their way back across it in hand-to-hand clashes. MA FLU VIRUS E San Francisco, Dei. 17 U.P) i Type A influenza virus, isolated from specimens of California and Oregon patients and corre soondlng to the virus found elsewhere In America during the present influenza epidemic, indicate the disease has spread from the east to the Pacific coast, the state department of health announced today, "Since type A influenza virus was first isolated in 1033, alt outbreaks found to be due to this agent have been uniformly mild," Dr. Wilton L. Halverson director of the department, said. He said type A vlm was responsible for the California Influenza epidemic of Decem ber, 1940, and said that at that time temperatures rarely rose above 102 degrees. The Illness lasted only ,a few days and there were few deaths,' he said.
