TAGE TWO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1943 E GREEN STAMPS EXPIRE MONDAY A9 B and C No. 4 Book OVER Vx ACRE OF PARKING OF mm Quinine Still Best Curative Drug Sulphanamidcs Treatment Fails. Br Henry Toiil Russell United Press Correspondent London (U.R) Malaria U pub lic enemy No. 1 on the list it tropical medical war-research men here, with baclllary dysert tery and louse-typhus close re ipectlve runnors-up. This claim was made to the United Press by" one of the best known medical research authori ties in this country, whose nunc cannot be quoted by virtue of British Medical Council rjiles. "Research goes on unceasing ly," he explained, "in the direr tlon of both prevention and cure. Many of us still feel, however that prevention is better than cure. "So far as malaria Is con cemed, apart from specialized experiments of which details are not likely to be released by milt tary authorities in time of war quinine is still at the head of the list of curative treatments The war, however, has empha sired the equal if not superior value of Its ten-year-old sub stitute: Atabrine (known In Eng land as mepachrine). "As 00 per cent of the world's quinine was produced In the Dutch East Indies, now In Jap anese occupation, the use for at brine has naturally Increased enormously. ' All the statistics which I have studied indicate that successes In treatment equul and sometimes surpass the ef fects obtained with quinine." The United Press . Informant revealed that other drugs, In eluding the now famous sulpha namides, had failed In the treat ment of malaria. Discussing prevention of the same disease, he said It was a common mistake to assume that quinine, atabrine or any other known drug waa 100 per cent efficient in the prevention ut malaria. , "There Is no known drug that can unfailingly Immunize against malaria," he said; "a lit tle common sense would show how stupid It would be to gen eralize. Obviously, prevention la easier to secure by the taking ol regular doses of drugs where the number of malaria-bearing mosquitoes Is not excessive. But those who secure comparative i not absolute Immunity In such circumstances might then be at mazed as disappointed to find that they would succumb In apite of all precautionary drug ging. In districts where the pesU are more numerous. "To put It another way, pre vention has a good deal to do with how many times the vlctln1 geta bitten every night. I If he eta bitten too often he may well ' absorb more malaria than his system contains of preventive drugs. In these cases, malar.a (eta the upper hand and the mosquito wins the day." - On the question of prevention he expressed the opinion - that Pan-American Airways African route airdromes were a "model which could well be followed bv all those Interested In 'domiciling white men In malaria-Infested districts." , ' "Their methods Include the prevention of -breeding at the source, screening of buildings to keep out pests, nets over bed ding, spraying the inside of buildings, taking preventive drugs, and the frequent examl nations of potential victims. 'The fact that they spent a good deal of money installing modern devices such as refriger ators to safeguard food supplier was. In my view, all to the good One .thing Is certain, whatever expenditure was Involved mus' have been well repaid if results are considered, for they wore highly successful."
