Br Jerry Hannifin United Press Staff Correspondent Salem, Ore., Dec. lft U.PJ The Oregon Blue Book for 1943 44 contains statistics concerning schedule of salaries paid coun ty officials who perform the same work but draw lower pay in more populous counties than they do In the smaller ones. A comparison of salaries paid the same county official in Ore gon's 36 counties showed little conformity or proportion when considering population and busi ness volume. None Excessive Certainly none of the salaries paid would be considered exces sive under normal conditions, and war-time prices and taxes have reduced them even further. For counties of approximately the same size there is a discrep ancy, and the contrast between salaries paid In some of the larg est counties as compared with those of the smallest is consid erable. For example, Marlon county, with a population of 75,248. pays It sheriff $2400 a year, while Lake county,, with a population of 9293, pays Its sheriff $2600. The Jackson county sheriff gets $2875. The school superintendent of Wheeler county receives .$750 a . year and the same office In Gil Ham -county gets $2200. The population and size of these two counties are about the same, Wheeler having 2974 and Gil liam 2844, according to the cen sus figures on page 283 of the Blue Book. Lane Figure Low Lane county, with a popula tion of 89,098, Is the state's edu cation center. It pays its county school superintendent a modest $2400 a year, but in Lincoln county, population 14,549, the superintendent receives $2780 Jackson county' superintendent is pa 2300. The office of county clerk Is a good example of Irregularity .In pay schedules. The clerk of Clackamas county is paid $2400 a year while the clerk of Clat ' sop county receives $2967. The population of Clackamas coun ty is 57,130 and Clatsop county Is only half Its size with 24 697. In Marion county, the state's largest in population outside of Multnomah, the clerk teceives $2400 a year, while Coos county, less than one-half its size with 32,477 population, pays its clerk $2600 a year. The clerk of Jack ton county receives $2300. Assessors Listed Consider the case of Oregon county assessors: Yamhill coun ty pays a salary of $2100, but Deschutes pays $2400. Yamhill's population is 26,336, while Des chutes claims only 18,831. Ben ton county, population 18,629, pays its assessor $2415, while its neighbor, Linn, with a citi zenry of 30,485 only pays $1800. Jackson pays $2300. The salaries paid county treas urers vary from $1000 a year to $3600, but the average for the 36 counties Is $1800. The Jackson county treasurer gets $2300. School superintendents average $2000. Sheriffs rate the highest com pensation with an average of $2533 a year, and the county clerks are next best paid with an average of $2347. In Jackson the county judge deceives $2760. Multnomah county has the high est schedule of salaries. The sheriff and county clerk each re ceive $6000 a year, which raises the average of the state's 33 oth er counties, where sheriffs are paid from $1800 un to $3243 and clerks $1800 up to $2967. in 1941 the legislature nrovld- ed some adjustments in the sal aries of county offices, but In some Instances the Increase did not become effective until the first of this year. Neither the Blue Book nor the session laws explain the complex salary system which never has been presented to the labor rela tions board or other authority. A few taxpayers assume It's all a matter of legislative wisdom combined with suggestions from the home districts. ORDERED TO PAY Los Angeles, Dec. 16 U.B Electrician Otis Sullivan, who married Mrs. Nettle Sullivan, his common-law wife, four days after he became the husband of another wo man, today was ordered to pay $25 weekly sep arate maintenance to' wife No. 2. Mrs. Sullivan, 46 -year -old former boarding house keeper I said Sullivan, 41, married her in 1 Ft. Wayne, Ind., Feb. 18, 1942. Sullivan is still awaiting trial on bigamy charges. Due to the fact that Camp White has been es tablished here for some time and almost all families of the area have made friends with the servicemen and their families through churches, recreation centers and other contacts, it is considered no longer necessary to arrange "dates" between the servicemen and families. However, council members urge all residents of the valley to entertain as many of the men as possible during the holiday season, not only for Christmas and New Year's Day dinners, but for all sorts of affairs during the entire holiday season. It was stated that if residents have difficulty in locating any persons which they wish to en tertain, help may be received by calling 7131, the Riverside USO. - Mrs. John McCabe Is chair man of the borne hospitality committee. Pvt. LaMurle Witt Finishes Training In Women's Corps Pvt. LaMurle Beck Witt has completed her basic Women's Army corps training at Ft. Des MSines, la., and is now awaiting further orders. Mrs. Witt left Oregon Oct. 29 for the training center. Mrs. Witt's husband, T. Sgt. Richard H. Witt, a former civilian pilot, is in New Guinea with the army air corps and her brother; CpL Alfred M. Beck, likewise a former private pilot. Is an army air corps mechanics' instructor at Yuma, Ariz. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Michael Beck of Rt 2. Just prior to her enlistment Mrs. Witt was employed as a secretary at Camp White.
