Los Angeles, Dee. 9 (U.R) Atrocities inflicted by Japanese soldiers on young Chinese men and girls were describee today by a missionary testifying be fore an assembly committee in vestigating the Japanese prob lem. Dr. Ralph H. Phillips, mission ary in China for 26 years, said Jap soldiers repeatedly -aped some 7,000 Chinese girls between 9 and is years 'of age and then murdered all who were left ""alive. Phillips, one of the Americans in charge of a Nanking refugee camp seized by the Japs, said more than 50,0pQ young men and boys were mowed down with ma chine guns. "Then the Japs poured gaso line on them and burned their bodies," he told the committee. headed by Assemblyman Ches ter Cannqn of Sacramento. All for Emperor Phillips, who has made sev eral trips to Japan, declared all Japanese, regardless of place of birth, are loyal to the emperor. S (U.R) The Oregon Liquor Control com mission today will receive $2, 000,000 of surplus funds ot the State Bond commission to use In purchasing the corporate stock of two Kentucky distilleries, but the money must be repaid with in 30 days. The bond commission Wednes day voted the loan in a 'closed session with a liquor control commission member. It acted by unanimous vote to lend the money from surplus, although already earmarked, funds. It was understood the commis sion had approximately $1,500, 000 In its own accounts, but the $3,700,000 was needed to sup port Oregon's part of the stock purchase. The Interest rate on the commission's $2,000,000 loan was not revealed. It was secured largely by the liquor commis sion's inventories. ' Mr. Papworth was born at Mackay, Idaho, April 12, 1884. Hat was united in marriage to Miss Mary Germer at Clayton, Idaho, in 1909. They lived in San Francisco, for 15 years, be fore coming to Medford. He was a barber by occupa tion. Survivors include his wife, of Route No. 1, Ashland; one brother, Ray Papworth, Clayton, Idaho; three sisters, Mrs. Fran ces Cearley, Clayton, Idaho; Mrs. Ida Worthington, Mullen, Idaho, end Mrs. Lizzie Frost, Mackay, Idaho. Beckelhymer, well known resident of Southern Ore gon and operator of a restau rant at Union Creek for many years, passed away in Los Ange les, Calif., on Dec. 4th, after year's illness. He had been In the south since October 1. Mr.- Beckelhymer was born at Cairo, 111., on Dec. 29, 1881, and had been a resident of this county since 1915. He Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cecil P. Beckelhymer, of Union Creek, and one son, Herbert Bnckelhymer of Los An Roles, Calif., and a brother, J. D. Beckelhymer, also of Los An geles. Funeral services will be con ducted from the Perl Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p. m., the Rev. Harry Hansen officiating. Interment will take place In Medford I. O. O. F. cemetery.
