MEDFORD. MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1943 PAGE FIVE SIXTH ZERO WITH ONE GUNFIRING Lt.; Alvln Jensen, USMC, First Accredited Ace in Group Logs 200 Hours. Headquarters, TJ. S. South Pacific Forces (Delayed) (U.R) Second Lt. Alvin J. Jensen, USMC, recently commissioned after winning his wings as. an enlisted man and the first ac credited ace in his fighter squadron, shot down his sixth Jap plane on August 26, al though all but one of his guns bad failed, reports from Munda airdrome revealed today. In addition, Jensen, who has logged more than 200 hours of combat flying in the south Pa cific, destroyed at least four Jap planes in a lone strafing sweep over the strong Kahili airfield separated from the rest of his squadron, Jensen, formerly a flying staff sergeant, lives at (1236-llth St. I WORTH WAITING FOR Vour favorite man has gone to war . . . and with him has gona" your favorite Sodete chocolates and candies. When sometimes you don't find these delicious confections at the: candy counter, remember that they, too, are "worth waiting for." IMPERIAL CANDY CO. SIATTll ' N. W.) Washington, D. C. Marine combat correspondent Staff Sgt. Pen T. Johnson (167 Santa Clara avenue) (Oakland, Cal., reported that outstanding of the approximately 25 combat escort missions and raids In which Jensen has participated was a recent strafing mission over Kahili.. Jensen started with 16 fight ers late one afternoon, but be came separated from the forma tion in a thunderhead. He fought his way through the storm clouds and emerged an hour later alone and only a few miles from Kahili. "I brought my Corsair down to tree-top level, skimming over a steep hill flanking the airfield runway," Jensen was quoted as saying. "At the near end of the runway were 12 large Jap bombers. I opened up with all my guns. Two of the bombers immediately burst into names. One blew up, starting a huge fire. -. "At the very far end of the runway I saw at least 10 Jap Zeros parked wingtip to wing- tip. As I flew in with Blazing guns I could see the heads of several pilots sticking out of the cockpits. I saw my tracers strike home. In a few seconds, two of the Zeros were burning fiercely. " ' "I made one more run, sweep ing the entire field with my guns. I don't think I missed a plane." Jensen knocked down his first two Japs, both Zeros, on April 7 during his first trip to the south Pacific combat zone. He became his squadron's first ace on August 5, during his second trip to the combat zone, when he shot down three more Japs when his formation of 16 fight ers was jumped by 30 Zeros. On August 26, while on a bomb escort mission, Jensen's division of four fighters again was attacked by 30 Zeros. All but one of Jensen's guns had gone out of commission, but he managed to shoot down one of the Japs. When his last gun quit, Jen sen reversed positions with his wingman, 1st Lt. Hartwell V. Scarborough, USMC, Aulander, N. C, who got three Zeros to become the squadron's second ace. Scarborough knocked down his first two Japs on April 7. Jensen enlisted in the marines in May, 1940, and won his wings as an aviator in August, 1942. In Mav. 1943. he was a staff ser geant when he won his commis sion as a second lieutenant. OWNERS COMPLAIN Los Angeles (U.R) The city council is up against one of its toughest and most humanitarian problems, namely whether to continue the enforcement of the ordinance requiring pet-food dealers to mix a certain amount of charcoal in horsemeat to ren der it unfit for human consump tion. The council Is receiving scores of complaints from cat owners. Some complain that the charcoal-treated meat makes lt unpalatable for the pets, while another woman insists that ever since her whole collection of pet cats began eating the stuff they have all been seized with intes tinal sluggishness.
