PAGE TWGF MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1943 TO RECEIVE AID OF T Variety Of Projects In Jack son County For Service Men And Civilian Morale. A variety of project have been sponsored by the Jackson County Recreation committee, entered on the budget of the Medford Community Chest for this coming year as a participat ing agency, since organization of the committee more than two years ago. Among the projects have been the Medford Nursery school, the MarKade, the Out post. Wing In, a recreation cen ter for negro troops and several smaller projects. Currently the committee is sponsoring an in vestigation of teen age recrea tion problems In Medford. It is pointed out by chest of ficials that since the activities of the committee are so diverse, and since some projects need more financial assistance than others, funds allocated from the chest will not be earmarked. This Main Projects . Three largest projects spon sored by the committee last year were the Outpost, the MarKade and the Wing In. Newest of these is the MarKade, recreation center for enlisted servicemen and wives housed in the new wing of St. Mark's. Episcopal church on North Oakdale Ave Attendance at the center has averaged nearly 2,000 men a month for the three months of operation, ' according to the director, Mrs. Lillian Hinman. The center is equipped with all manner of recreational facilities and in addition dances are given twice a week and informal musi cal events are planned. A group El of 40 women serve as volunteer I senior hostesses and 40 young women, known as Markettes, at tend dances ana omerwise assist with the program. Wives are as sisted with housing problems and in finding employment The Outpost has served a double purpose since its estab lishment, being used as a recrea tion center for enlisted men un til opening of the new USO on Riverside avenue. Since that tune, June, the Outpost has been converted to the use of junior army officers, army nurses, W A C officers and officers' wives. Outpost Popular . The Outpost plans dances and musicals, a bridge luncheon is given one afternoon a week, a lending library is maintained and there is a fine collection of records. The men use the center as a place to meet friends and dates, read, write letters, press cipthes and in a variety of other manners while the wives use the center for Red Cross meet ings, as an information bureau, a bousing bureau and a general center for social activities. An average of 75 officers, 35 wives and 30 civilians visit the club dally, according to the director, Mrs. I. E. Schuler. One of the oldest projects of the committee is the airport can teen. Wing In, which has been in operation about two years and has now a reputation among hundreds of army aviators who write to praise the excellent food and cheerful hospitality, The little canteen Is run for the benefit of military personnel only, both enlisted men and of ficers, and food is served at cost, Volunteer help keeps the can teen in operation from 10 a. m until 10 p. m. daily and hundreds of meals are served each week Since airports are traditionally known among aviators as having poor eating facilities, Jackson county's Wing In is considered unique.
