Williams, Bee, The rigors of army life In the bleak, windswept Aleutian Islandt were described by Grant Bean, former local agent for General Petroleum company upon his arrival here last week for a short visit after being re leased from the army, because of age, into the enlisted reserve corps. After spending 13 months In the Aleutian! In the transporta tion corps of the army, Bean ' said the weather there "la aa miserable at you can Imagine. It la always cold, with the wind twirling In from all direction! most of the time." He told how they moved onto one island and Just after they got their tents pitched three fourths of them were blown down by a bad storm. He said five or six men lived in each tent, and that at one time there were six inches of mud and water on the ground Inside. Bean described how every man pitched In and did his job aurmg ins early months of the occupation, working at their ut most for long hours. Conditions Improved greatly later, he said, after living facilities were con structed. "We had nothing but C and D rations to eat at first," he re called, "but later we got really good food, the best, in fact, Just as soon as It was possible to get It In." Most of the entertainment at first consisted of gambling, be cause there was uothintt else to do, but later the soldiers enjoyed movies in yielr tents and in buildings when they were con structed, Bean said. Bean and his soldier mates were bombed and strafed by Japanese planes several timet, but he said that not a great deal of damage was done because of the effective anti-aircraft fir and the interception by Ameri can planes ot the Jap raiders. . lnere are no women in the Aleutians, Bean said, and boyi away from their wives and sweethearts really discover how much affection they have for their loved ones.
