Engle, and Bob Van Fleet. At University Cadet Robert K. Stead is now at Indiana Uni versity where he is studying en gineering under the army's col lege training program. Cadet Stead has previously been sta tioned at Camp Haan, Cal. The young man graduated from Med ford aenior high in 1942, hav ing been a member of the foot ball team, and was a student at Oregon State college when in ducted into the army. . Furlough Finished Fred H. Wilcox, electrician's mate, third class In the U. S. navy, left yes terday for a new assignment at a destroyer base in San Diego, Calif., after spending a week's furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Wilcox of Route 1, Wilcox, who graduated from a navy electrician's school at Ames, Iowa, just recently com pleted a course at a gyro-compass school in San Diego. fHe is a Phoen.ix, .high graduate and attended Southern Oregon College of Education in Ashland, and joined the navy last Novem ber. At Farragut Robert Jay Peterson, son of Mrs. Mary Con rad of Medford has reported for training at the naval training station at Farragut, Ida., accord ing to a press release from the station. During his stay here, he will learn the fundamentals of seamanship and undergo physical training. On comple tion of the course, he will be as signed to a navy service school for specialized training, or" will report to the fleet for aotion at sea. Daughter Born Word has been received here of the blrtn of a second daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Colvig, in San Frarv Cisco September 29. Mrs. Colvig, the former Honey Reddy, is making her home there. Mr. Colvig, editor of the Sunday Oregonlan prior to his joining the U. S. navy, is stationed at Quonset Point, R. I., attending a naval officers' training school. Both Mr. and Mrs. Colvig were born and raised in Medford and have many friends here. BURNS IN NIGHT A large barn on the Jimmy Sutherlin property, located three-quarters of a mile beyond the Big Y on the new Camp wmte Highway, burned about 1 a. m. today, completely destroy ing the building and about four or five tons of hay stored in it. Neighbors and friends turned out to help the pumper crew from tne state Forest patrol fight the the blaze which threatened for a time to spread to other near-by ranch buildings, Damage was unestimated today, but the ' loss was said to be partly covered by insurance. An auction to dispose of Mr. Sutherliri's cattle, previously scheduled for this afternoon, was to be held as planned. All livestock escaped from the barn without injury. Small fires started in nearby patches of grass, but quick action of the fire fighters saved the house and milk house from damage. The fire was first discovered by two soldiers who aroused Mr Sutherlin. Since the barn was located outside the city limits of Medford, the local fire de partment did not dispatch equip ment to the blaze. Use Mall Tribune Want Ada. Fir Phone 3873 Camp White Army Auxiliary Red Cross Sewing Unit com pleted work last Wednesday on most essential and important equipment for the 104th Evacua tion hospital, now on maneuvers, as part of their regular produc tion hospital needs. At the re quest of Major Orlay Plummer, chief of surgery of the Fourth corps tactical hospital, the work was undertaken with 2nd Lt. May A. Buelow, A.N.C., instruct ing. Sgt. Lenke designed the instrument cases. Mrs. Horace B. Buchan. sub- chairman in charge of sewing, reported that more than 75 army wives have contributed 1,017 hours to the project and have completed 1,149 articles, including wrappers for surgical instruments and equipment and large surgical instrument cases. The work was carried on dur ing August and September un der the direction of Mrs. Park B. Herrick, i chairman of the unit. On Wednesday Mrs. John W. Horsley was appointed chair man, replacing Mrs. Herrick who accompanied her husband, Lt. Col. Herrick, to their new station. Mrs. Horsley announces that the next assignment of this army group will be the making of 100 or more kit bags in Octo ber for overseas use. Mrs. Orln Schenck, Jackson county pro duction chairman, will direct the work. The sewing group meets regu larly on Wednesdays, from 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. in the "basement of the Medford hotel. All army wives interested in Red Cross production are Invited to come and bring their sandwiches, Coffee is served. ADVICE OFFERED The county health department through Walter I. Sutherland, sanitarian, reported it had come to their attention school boards, individuals and others of Jack son county have been approach ed by persons seeking to con tract for removal of sludge from septic tanks and other sewage receptacles. Where such work is needed, lt is urged that the department be consulted befosjc authorizing any cleaning or before paying for it, let the department inspect it. There is no charge to school districts or Individuals for the services of the sanitarian. The health department re ports excessive charges for such cleaning have been made in some instances. It is further stated by the de partment that many times those engaged do not live in the county, leave after performing the work and it Is difficult to hold them responsible. Value of building permits is sued by the city inspector's of fice last month totaled $97,965, the largest September on record. Figure for the same period last year was $28,638. The all-time September high was recorded by virtue of the Housing Investment company obtaining permits to construct 30 $3,000 defense housing units Of the remainder of the 54 per mits issued, 16 were for residen tial repairs costing $4,250, four were for new garages costing $640, one was for the remodel ing of a church costing $2,500 and three were for repairs to business firms costing $575.
