Sept. 80 u.PJ The 1944 status of Manager Leo Durocher of the Brooklyn Dodg ers was left In doubt today by one of President Branch Rick ey's typical maneuvers. , 1 Rickey announced late yester day that Durocher will be given his unconditional release as player-manager when the club concludes its season against Cin cinnati Sunday . but that Leo would have an equal opportu nity, along with other aspirants, to negotiate for the job as bench manager of the Dodger next year. Rickey said Durocher also would be free to negotiate for some other job in baseball, In radio or in Hollywood. The ref erence to radio and Hollywood may have been directed at the several radio appearances Leo has made in the past few months and the fact that he has many friends among the film stars. Patterson to hold the Army-Navy football game here. . The mayor's action followed report from New York indi cating that the game might be shifted there. (U.R) The Chicago Cubs today announced the purchase of three more members of the Los Angeles An gels. . They are pitchers Jodie Phlpps and J. M. Lynn, and Second Baseman Roy Hughes. Terms of the purchase were not an nounced. Lynn won 21 games and lost eight for the Angels, while Phlpps won 17 and lost five. Hughes batted .325. The Cubs also acquired Sec ond Baseman Don Johnson from the Milwaukee Brewers, assign ing Catcher Chico Hernandez and Outfielder Hal Pack to the American association pennant winners. (U.R) The government's first quarter of the 1944 fiscal year ends to day with wail expenditures for the period well over $20,000, 000,000 and the public debt now standing at more than $161, 000,000,000. War spending for the same quarter of last year was only a little more than $14,000,000,000 and the public debt at the end of September, 1942, was a little over $90,000,000,000. At the present rate of spend ing, the national debt will soar over the $200,000,000,000 mark this year well over $1,500 for every man, woman and child in the United States. It was originally expected that the treasury would submit sev eral alternative proposals to congress, including compulsory savings and an increase in social security taxes. But Chairman Walter F. 'George, D., Ga., of the senate finance committee said yesterday after a meeting of congressional and treasury tax officials with the president that It was his un derstanding the treasury would submit a single unified plan, . George said . administration leaders had not agreed on final details, but reliable sources re vealed that the plan probably would urge an Increase of $7,- 000,000,000 to $8,000,000,000 in income taxes, about $1,500,000, 000 more in corporate taxes, and another $2,500,000,000 in luxury taxes. .
