Washington, Sept. 30 U.B John Lee, manager ol the West Coast Air Production council, said today that at the present turnover rate It would be neces sary to recruit 1,700,000 work ers for the aircraft Industry by next spring If stepped-up 1944 production schedules are to be met. Lee said that 2,000,000 work ers are now employed in the aircraft Industry and that be tween 400,000 and 000,000 ad ditional workers must be added to meet the BO per cent dollar volume increase over 1043 air craft output called for by the armed forces. Because of labor turnover this means more than 1,700,000 workers must be found altogether, he said. No. 1 Problem Ha gave his estimates at news conference of 19 leading aircraft company executives, attending a meeting here of the National Aircraft War Produc tion council on manpower prob lems. The aircraft officials agreed that manpower is the Industry a number one problem. T.Claude Ryan, president of the Ryan Aeronautical Co., said, "frankly. unless specific steps are taken that goal (for 1944 production) cannot be made." P. G. Johnson, president of Boeing Aircraft Co., said that it may be necessary to break down some integrated aircraft plants .and move some assembly work to areas where manpower is available. There must also be an Increase in the employment of women, he said, and recruit ment must go beyond the area in which plants are located.. The name warden was looking for spotlight hunt ers reported by .cattlemen as active In the area for several weeks. Each defendant denied spotlight hunting and said they killed the deer for fresh meat. With seven children In their two families, both said they had plenty of ration points. Herman Brothers, employers of the men, in a letter to county officials asked leniency for the pair on the grounds they were essential defense workers.
