U.R When Connie Mack started the supposedly decrepit Howard Ehmke for Philadelphia In the 1929 world series opener against the Chicago Cubs, he also start ed an annual guessing game. Each year as the fall sociable approaches, there Is an aura of speculation whether the rival managers are supposed to be grooming pitchers who are either getting social security benefits or have limp arms. Ehmke, an old man as pitch ers go, had been of little use that year and hadn't pitched in weeks so the baseball world was surprised when Mack put him In. He wasn't supposed to have sood same left in him, but he set an all-time series record by striking out 13 Cubs ana win- nlnff A to 1. Because of the Yankee's dis taste for southpaw pitching, this veer's soeculatton centers round Ernie White, Cardinal lefty, who shut out the New Yorkers last fall, but who since was supposed to have suffered a recurring Injury to his arm. White was more or less of a surprise starter last fall, because he had won only seven games and didn't compare with some of the other Redbird pitching satellites. Curve Right ' Whether Manager Billy South' worth was living White series airing yesterday is something the Yankees probably would Ilka to know, but he pitched his first complete game since May 13 and defeated the Boston Braves 6 to 3. The durable relief hurler started gainst the Cuba who betted him out in the fifth and went on to win 18 to 9 in the ISth on BUI Nicholson's homer. Yankees Will Divide Series Cash 47 Ways; $500 lo Servicemen New York, Sept 28 AM The New York Yankees today voted to split their share of the world series money Into 47 shares, 32 of which were full divisions. The 25 ball players each re ceive a full share, as does Man ager Joe McCarthy, Coaches Art Fletcher, Earle Coombs and John Schulte, the batting practice pitcher, Paul Schreiber, Travel ing Secretary Rex Wyeant and Club Trainer Ed Frocllch. The Yanks also voted $300 apiece to players who were with the club last year but are now with the armed services. They Included Joe DIMagglo, Red Ruf fing, Phil Rlzzuto, Buddy Bas sett, Tommy Henrich, George Selkirk and Noiman Branch. The groundkeepers were vot ed $1300 and a like sum was awarded to the club housekeep er with $750 going to his assist ant. Bat Boy Pat O Dougherty was allotted another $750 and Art Roth, former traveling sec retary, who has been ill this sea son, will receive $500. In addition to the voted shares, the Yankees collected $320 for the clubhouse gatekeepers. SEALS NOSE OUT SEATTLE FOR CUP San Francisco, Sept. 28. In a shakeup involving 10 players and four minor league clubs, he obtained two pitching prospects, Norman Brown, a IB game winner with Louisville and Luke (Hot Potato) Hamlin, big league veteran, who won 20 games and pitched five shutouts with Toronto this year. He got Joe Moore, former New York Giant outfielder from Indian apolis, and purchased three rook ies, George Kell, a .410 batter and third baseman, Louis Flick, outfielder, who hit .400 and Nor man Wheaton, utility player from Lancaster, Pa., of the In terstate league. CARDINALS SIGN St. Louis, Sept. 28 (U.R) Man ager Billy Southworth, whose St. Louis Cardinals have won two pennants, finished second and third In his four years at the helm, will lead the team again in 1944. President Sam Breadon an nounced last night that he had retained Southworth for an other year in "one of the most pleasant transactions to which he had ever been a party. He did net reveal the terms of the contract Southworth took over the Cards in June, 1940, when they were in seventh place.
