Some were burled In the earth beneath the feet of the living. Over Altavllla raged some of the hardest fighting yet seen on the Italian mainland, and al though the Allied forces oc cupied the town Sunday, the citizens did not dare come out of their wine cellars until today. They agreed that at least 100 died from wounds and some hunger as they huddled in the cellars, listening to the criss cross fire over their heads and the muffled sounds of conflict when Allied and German patrols battled overhead with bayonets. They did not dare to venture out for food. They lived on the little they had on hand. Few Had Meat Most ate such local products as cactus pears or corn. A, few who had a chicken or pig around the house when the fighting started, fared better, but most had taken their live stock away. The remaining Inhabitants were too hungry to show the longing for a cigarette which Is typical of Italian refugees in newly-taken cities. They wanted only food, especially candy and chocolate. They said they had burled their dead in the cellars as best they could. A church In Altavllla was un damaged. Special services were held there this morning to com memorate the deliverance of the populace. Gold Hill Gold Hill. Wallace Iverson of the army air force, stationed at Mr Clellan field, Sacramento, Cal., left Sept. 21 to visit his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs Ellis Matthews and family, at Klamath Falls, before returning to McClellan field. He has spent a two-weeks furough in Gold Hill, at his mother's home. Sgt. Joe Hope left Sept. 20 to be stationed at Santa Anita, Cal. His wife, the former Ruth Lance of this city, will remain here for the time being and Is em ployed in an office at Camp White, Mrs. Ida Snyder of Myrtle Point, Ore., former resident of Gold Hill, is staying at the R. L. Kenaston home. Junior gardeners will bring their flower and vegetable en tries to the school auditorium in the forenoon on Sept. 24, for the show, being sponsored by the Gold Hill Garden club. Displays will be open to parents and oth er school patrons in the aft ernoon. Miss Yvonne Moore - enter tained a group of friends at her home on Sept. 14- Present were her cousins, Miss Gloria and Miss Beverly Hall of Bryte, Cal.; Leona Holderness, Weegie Dungey, Joyce Robbins, Eileen Frost, Katherlne Hayes, Pat Mil berry, Nadra Moore- Mrs. Earl Moore and the hostess. Miss Hildegarde Swenson and Miss Matilda Webber returned here recently from Minnesota, where they were called by the death of Miss Swenson's father. The ladles reside In the Garner house, across from the school-house. John Tepovac has moved from the Hammersly house to the Bozy Tepovac property, Mrs. John Tepovac and two children are visiting relatives In California. Recent guests at the Emmett Sutton home were Mr. and Mrs Art Mullin and children and Mrs. Etta Bean of Medford. Also Mr. and Mrs- Bruce Metzger of Med ford. Mrs. Metzger, the former June Mullin, Is a granddaughter oi the Buttons and her husband Is home on leave from the U; S. navy at Farragut, Idaho. M. E.
