(U. An automatic pilot so perfectly developed it virtually converts plane into a stable, aerial platform from which high alti tude bombing can be conducted with a precision never before achieved was revealed today. Details of the electronically controlled instrument, which has been in use by the U. S. army air force since October, 1941, were disclosed by the air force and the Minneapolis Honeywell Regulator company. Take Pilots Duty The device takes over com pletely the duties of the pilot on bombing runs and holds the plane on a designated course without wavering, despite cross currents, wind variations and air blasts from exploding anti aircraft shells. So perfectly does the mechanism work that the plane usually is unaware of any movements from the prede termined course. Closely guarded, it was one of America's most secret of weap ons until the loss of planes bear ing it gave the details away to the enemy. Alfred M. Wilson, vice presi dent in charge of Honeywell's aeronautical division, said that the auto-pilot's electronic opera tion surpasses the sensitivity of all mechanical and electrical de vices previously used. Cut Bombing Run Because of the rapidity of its responses, Allied bombers have been able to cut down the time reaulred for the bombing run itself, Wilson explained. It has resulted in more highly coordin ate bombardienpilot teams, and bombing missions are made easier and more effective be cause pilot fatigue is reduced, Wilson said. "At high altitudes slight varia tions from a perfectly stable platform are greatly magnified," he said, "just as in the case of target rifle shooting where if a gunsight is off only a fraction of, an inch the bullet will miss the bull's eye by feet at several hundred vaTds. Wilson said that the electronic auto-pilot permitted installation of control stations in various parts of the plane so that it could be flown from two or three different points. This, he said, was the secret explaining the case of a Flying Fortress which returned safely after a Messerschmitt 109 shot away two-thirds of the fuselage area and severed the pilot manual controls connecting to the rudder and the elevators. The Kiwanls cigarette fund raised ' by local donations pro vided money for 110,000 cigar ettes which were sent by the local Kiwanls club recently' to servicemen in the south Pacific theatre of war. Officials of the club announced today that the drive would continue for an in definite time in an effort to raise a similar amount for a second shipment Contributions are made by placing donations in milk bot tles, labeled for the purpose, and placed in several down-town stores by the Kiwanls. 6 TANKERS BUILT Washington, Sept. 21 (U.PJ Ninety-six oil tankers, aggregat ing 1,597,600 deadweight tons, were delivered Into service by American shipyards from Janu ary through August this year, the . maritime commission re vealed today.
