Names Chimp The Grange Lake Creek Orange Lake Creek Grange met In regular session September 10 with Worthy Master Myrtle Charley presiding. Reports given included: Tom Stanley, agriculture committee, told that the market price Is set on hogs for a year ahead. The price on other commodities is about the same. Willard Walch, on ways and means committee, reported that at the last dance $43.30 was taken at the door. Nora Brad shaw, H.E.C., reported $21.08 taken In on dance supper. Reed Charley, cc-op commit tee, reported business Is excel lent. All are sorry to hear that Roscoe Roberts Is leaving as driver of the co-op truck. Merton Bradshaw, 4-H Beef club leader, spoke on the 4-H fair to bo held the last of this month at the fairgrounds. Ellyn Charley, educational committee, read an article on the teaching problem. Master Charley appointed Beth Zundel, Mrs. Burrels, Reed Charley, Claus Charley, Leonard Bradshaw and Mabel Brown on the war loan drive. Another dance will be given September S3. Bean, army engineer in charge of the construction of Camp White when that project was first un derway, and who has been at Bend for the past several months, will in the future be stationed at Walla Walla. The Bend army engineer's office, which has supervised the con struction of Camp Abbot near Bend and the Redmond and Modras air bases, is being closed the last week of this month. Construction activities for Bend, Redmond and Madras will In the future be handled out of Walla Walla, it has been an nounced, and Lakevlew, Klam ath and Medford projects, also handled at the Bend omce, have been transferred to the dis trict headquarters of the army engineer's office in Portland. Lt. Col. Bean will be In charge of the Walla Walla of fice and Lt. Col. A. D. Harvey, who has been In charge of the Bend office, has been trans ferred to San Francisco, Complaints will probably be filed against owners of stock tor permitting animals to run at large In the Griffin Creek and other herd districts of the county, the sheriff's office re ported today. For the past two weeks a deputy sheriff has been kept busy investigating and ad Justing complaints. Farm horses are the chief of fenders, according to Deputy Sheriff William Grenbemer. They enter alfalfa fields and in the hot part of the afternoons, when the flies are busy, go into orchards. They walk under the trees to rake off the flics, knock ing off many -poors. Orchard gates are open this time of year while picking Is underway. Complaints have also been re ceived of hogs, sheep, goats and cattle at large from all parts of the county. JACKSONVILLE ROBBER GOING BACK TO PRISON Richard Henry Teasley, 41. alias Marshall, arrested for the robbery of "Amy's Place" In Jacksonville, who has aamntea the crime, according to District Attorney George w. Neiison, will be returned to the Wash Inston state prison at Walla Walla. Teasley, serving a life term under the habitual crim inal act, escaped last January 18, according to the sheriff's of fice. Teasley, tha authorities say, took $20 In money, two bottles of beer and cigarettes from the Jacksonville store. Washington (U.F9 Blends of gasoline and alcohol may soon be used In automobiles as motor fuel, according to bulletin issued by the National Automo bile Dealers association. Basis of the statement was a series of tests conducted at the request of the Board of Economic Warfare, hopeful of finding that foreign produced alcohol could be com bined with -gasollne shipped abroad by lend-lease. Conducted under governmen tal auspices, the, tests have estab lished that alcohol blends can be used as automomile motor fuel. While elcoh61 and gaso line will generate about the same horsepower in the same engine, one and a half gallons of alcohol are required to pro duce as much .power as one gallon of gas. Blends contain ing less than 15 per cent of alco hol can be substituted for gaso line without carbureter adjust ment Blend Knocks Less The mixture, according to test, Is especially effective in high compression engines where it burn with less knock than gasoline alone. ' Development of the mixture did not originate in the United States. In Japan for some time statute has required that auto mobile fuels be 80 per cent gaso line and 20 per cent alcohol. Disadvantages of the mixture are numerous and not yet fully determined. . Contamination of the blend with water causes separation of the two liquids. Because of greater specific gravity, the alcohol settles to the bottom of the tank. While the engine 'Is hot, it Will continue to operate In the alcohol. But since alcohol is also less volatile than gasoline, a cold engine will not start when the carbureter Is full of alcohol. Induces Corrosion Alcohol blend corrode the fuel system. Gasoline does not. Therefore, if such blends be come common, changes in the materials used for tanks, pip ing and carburetor may be necessary. From the standpoint of cost and mileage the gasoline-alcohol blend is more expensive than unmixed ,gasoline. In addition, the blend fails to equal the mile age obtained from gasoline. ' The government is planning further research at a pilot plant being set - up In Peoria, 111. Here, evperiments will be car ried out to determine whether alcohol made from corn, pota toes, wheat and other carbohy drate crops Is suitable for com bination in gasoline-alcohol motor fuel. U. P.
