Job tor Job, the women have out-produced the men In most eases. But to effect this record, certain amount of adjustment was necessary. And, the survey emphasizes, It was the $715,000, 000 converted automobile con cern that adjusted to the women, and not vice versa. Convert Machines During the past year, while an average of about ZOO women a day were being assimilated In to the huge River Rouge, High land Park, Lincoln Park and Willow Run plants. Ford offi cials found they had to make some changes to accommodate them, for these reasons: 1. Female workers didn't per form well in extreme iieat. Such divisions as the supercharger test cells had - to be air-conditioned before the women reach ed the men's work rate. . 2. Women, naive about me chanical might, Just didn't fear machines. . Before an adequate safety quotient was reached, the concern had to "fool-proof" machines with extra guards, two-handle controls, and re placement of foot pedals with push buttons. 3. Women are still the weaker sex. Handling of heavy turrets, done manually by the men, is now done by mobile electric cranes operated by women. 4. Equipped with a Ford developed "borematlc" machine, women turned out machined parts equal to those of the best skilled workmen and In great er quantity. Ifolse Scares Women Ford experts are proud of their accomplishment In "adapt lng the Ford Motor Company to Women." "Look at them," guide points out "They're running ceiling cranes, driving hl-low trucks (scampering about the plant with platforms of parts), and getting by In every depart ment a testimonial to the flex ibility of a great industry." On one sole count has the Ford company found women de ficient. "They're timid about op erating punch presses because they make quite noise when they close," the company ex plained. "It did no good to tell them safety controls make the presses accident-proof they're ' Just too reared to work fast on .them." The efficiency men, who did so well in adjusting the Ford -company to women, haven't solved this one yot. The Grange Applegate Orange At the regular meeting of Applegate Grange it was de elded to have a community fair September 24 at the Community hall. Everyone Is invited to display the best of any produce they have. First, second and third prize ribbons will be given by Judges appointed for the evening. A program of games will be part of the enter tainment. Booster night was moved from September 30 to the regu lar meeting night of September 24.
