Italian Warship Surrenders Under Guns of British Navy . The four public elementary schools of the city will open Monday. September 20. Pupils for grades one to six will report for registration at 8:50 a. m Monday, September 20, at their respective schools. All pupils are eligible to enter school if they are six years of age on or beforeNovember 2, 1843. Pupils who are younger, but who will be six on or before January 28, 1944, may enter if they can pass a test showing them to have a mental age of six and a half years. Mental age ex aminations for young pupils are being given on appointment dur ing the week of September 13 to September 19 at the Junior high school bv Mrs. Blanche Canode. phone 4616. The entering of under age pupils is generally dis couraged by school authorities as it has seldom proved the wise thine to do. The Medford city schools pro vide several forms of special education to serve the needs of the handicapped pupils. in the district. Parents having children who are Dhysically handicapped, or who need any form of special education should get In touch with, the city school offices. phone 2157, so that provision may- be made for them' before the onening of school on aepi 20. Handicapped children from outlying districts that regularly send their pupils to Medford are also eligible for such special education without extra charge. The elementary schools open at 8:50 a. m. and dismiss at 3;45 d. m. for grades 5th to 6th; at 3:30 p. m. for grades 2nd and 3rd: and 3:15 n. m. for grade 1st, The following elementary schools of the city house grades one to six: Roosevelt, Lincoln, Jackson and Washington. The Roosevelt school serves all ter ritory east of the center line of the Pacific hiehway. The Lincoln school serves that portion of the cltv west of the Pacific highway and east of the Southern Facillc railroad tracks. The Jackson school serves the northwest part of the city, being that portion which lies west of the Southern Pacific railroad tracks and north of the center line of West Main street and the Jacksonville nign way. The Washington school serves the southwest part of the city, or that territory lying west of the railroad tracks and south of the center line oi nrai mom street and Jacksonville highway. The Junior high school serves the entire city for grades even, eight and nine, ine sen ior high school likewise serves the entire city lor grades ten, alr-ven. and twelve. Three elementary school dis tricts transport their children to Medford. Districts 29 Dewey, and 24 North Phoenix will de liver their elementary pupils to the Roosevelt school. District 102 will deliver to the Lincoln school. All elementary textbooks are furinshed. according to the law n nunils of the first eight grades. These will be distrib uted at the time of their regis tration in the several schools of the city. SPECIAL COURSES FORM EFFORT It was pointed out by both Superintendent E. H. Hedrlck and Principal Mayfield that not only have many of the regular courses offered In high school been geared to the war effort but a number of special courses designed to aid students who will be going into the military service are being offered. A course In pre-flight aero nautics similar to that given last year will be . offered by Mr. George Milligan, licensed pilot, who Is at present connect ed with the Medford Air Base. A course In radio communi cation has been worked up this summer and will be offered by Mr. H. F. Cope of the science rlr-nartment. Classes in sheet metal and in electric arc welding will be offered for credit. Mr. Van Hoosen who formerly taught here will be in charge of the sheet metal while Mr. Ed Leam- ine will be in charge ot the welding. Other military courses are first aid, commando training, and military drill. In addition to these courses the school provides special guid ance and coaching service to students who are headed for West Point. Blue Armies Face Coyote Trap Hazards. The Medford high school opens September 20 the same as other schools. Superintendent E. Hcdrick urged that high school and Junior high school pupils who are employed in fruit or other necessary labor in the valley stay on the job for at least another week. He pointed out that provision would be made so , that these students could catch up their work, and that they would suffer no educa tional disadvantage by remain ing out to help with the labor. All ninth grade students and students new to the Medford school district are requested to report Thursday and Friday B to 12 and 1 to 4. Students who are working are excepted from this. They need not appear for regis tration until their jobs are through and they can report for entry. Students who are not use fully employed should, of course, enter when school opens. Any student planning to at tend the Medford senior high school or 9th grade in the junior high whose parents legal resi dence is outside of School Dis trict No. 49 (Medford district) but within Jackson county must obtain an "out of district form' from the county school superin tendent's office In the Jackson county court house. This should be properly filled out and de livered to the county scnooi superintendent's office. The tuition card which is men issued from the county superin tendent's office is to be present ed to the school office when the student .enrolls. Any student who was attend Ing the Medford schools when they closed last June need not report until Monday morning, September zo, at w o ciock Any student new to the Med ford schools Is to report to the senior high school Thursday or Friday, September 16 or 17, be tween 12 noon and 4 p. m, Counselors will be on hand to assist students in registering and selecting courses. Students mov ing to Medford are requested to have their transcript of subjects and grades completed, with them or have them sent to the high school office before September 16. Students who are working are exempt from this advance registration. They should re main on their jobs until through, and register when they come in. Seattle, Sept. 14 (U.R) Sec retary of War Henry L. Stlmson, Undersecretary of War Robert Patterson and two Seattle War department aids face contempt of court action today as the result of the alleged seizure of property in defiance of a federal court order. A hearing was scheduled for tonight. . The action was brought by Lewis L. Stedman, attorney for owners of the Skinner-Eddy office building here. Stedman charged the army allegedly tdok over the building last Wednes day for storage space despite a prohibitive ruling Dy teaerai Judge John C. Bowen. The petition asked that the defendants be found guilty for contempt of court and punished for failure to honor the aue process of law. It stated the court order was Issued Aug. 13 denying the government's appli cation for condemnation ot the building, Judge Bowen had declared (By United Press) Benito Mussolini's Italian guard had orders to kill II Duce rather than let him reach Ger man hands but was surprised by parachutists before the orders could be carried out, Berlin radio said today. , A dispatch from Allied head quarters in North Africa said that, judging irom Axis ana neu tral radio reports of the Inci dent, Mussolini was found by the Germans in a secret fortress in the Abruzzi mountains In cen tral Italy. Berlin did not Identify the location of the "rescue" in a long report boasting about the exploit but said that the men who carried it out were awarded "high decorations" by Adolf Hitler. According to the German ver sion, the orders to shoot Mus solini came from Premier Mar shal Pietro Badoglio, who moved the fallen duce from place to place tor days and used "large military units" to guard him try ing to hide his place ol deten tion from the Germans. The headquarters account said these places included Fort Broc cl, near Rome; Ponza island In the Gulf of Gaeta; Maddalena Island north of Sardinia and fin ally the mountain fortress. Berlin, in a broadcast rec orded by the United Press in New York, said II Duce "was at last brought to a completely in accessible mountain massive, where he was held under the most shameful circumstances and under the heaviest guard. The action to get him, the broadcast said, was under a hauptsturmfuehrer storm troop leader. Troops oi the Waffen SS and paratroops took part. It added. "in spite ot uaaoguo s oraer to shoot Mussolini in the event of an attempt to free him," the broadcast said, "the surprise was so complete that II Duce was not harmed." (U.R) Under the scrutiny of 1,500 umpires, 75,000 men, be longing to two opposing armies, today fanned out over 10,000 square miles of central Oregon's mountains, desert and canyons to begin their nine-week test war. Reconnaissance units of both the red and blue armies crept ahead under cover of darkness early today to find troop con centrations and discover forma tion plans. Meantime, artillery was shell ing into position, field hospitals being arranged and infantrymen, foreseeing the sleepless nights ahead, were digging themselves slit trenches in which to catch their 40 winks.
