U.R The old familiar cry ot "wait till next year" went up in Brooklyn today after the Dodgeri closed their home season as they op ened it, with a victory. It as sured the Dodgeri of a first di vision berth, but was a far cry from first . place . which the Gowanus faithful had predicted as lata as June.' Durocher's dandles bowed out of Ebbett's Field with an 8-4 de cision over the Philadelphia Phillies. Al Cerheauser, hurling for the losers, had the situation in hand until the seventh Inning when a six run uprising clinched the game for Curt Davis. Excellent pitching highlighted the activity throughout the league, Elmer Riddle's one-hitter against Pittsburgh being the . most noteworthy. Riddle retired the first 22 men to face him in winning his 19th game, and had a perfect game working until the eighth when Bob Elliott doubled to the left field scoreboard. The Pirate third baseman failed to advance, however, and Cincinnati took the first of two games, 1-0, Xavier Resclgno earned the Bucs split with a four hit, 7-0 shutout in the nightcap. Starr was charged with the loss. The New York Giants extend ed their winning streak to four games by taking both ends of a doubleheader from the Boston Braves, 3-0 and 7-2. St. Louis at Chicago In the National league was postponed. Yanks Win Pali In the Junior circuit the New York Yankees, steamrolling to ward another pennant, took two games from the Boston Red Sox. A crowd of 86,000 saw the Chicago Beara beat Washington yesterday at Baltimore's munic ipal stadium. On Sept. S, a turn out of 49,000 saw Green Bay shade Washington on the same field. A total ot 101.000 fans at two exhibition grid games is a talking point, at least. Three different groups of Bal timore sportsmen are desirous ot obtaining a national circuit franchise. One of these groups made an official bid for a fran chise at the league's June meet ing, but the bid was tabled with out a vote because of war con ditions. Southworth May Toss Young Flingers Against Yankees By Tommy Devina , United Press Staff Correspondent Chicago, Sept 13. (U.R) Billy Southworth, manager of the pennant-bound St. Louis Cardinals, Indicated today be is ready to defy world series tradition again by placing heavy reliance on rookie pitchers for another triumph over the New York Yankees. Southworth was the target for considerable critcism a year ago when he chose the untested John ny Beazley to face Ernie Bonham u. the second game of the aeries. But the gamble paid off hand somely when Beazley won, 4 to 3. Johnny then came back to win the fifth and deciding game, 4 to 2, at the expense of the vet eran "Red ' Ruffing. That evidence is enough for Southworth, so he's planning to give the Yankees more "fresh men phenoms." His two out standing first year pitching per formers are a pair of southpaws, Harry Brecheen and Alpha Bra- zle. As the Cardinals rested after their, doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs was postponed yesterday, Southworth discussed his series pitching plans. The ro tation of the hurlers hasn't been decided by the Redbird skipper, but the mound personnel is posi tive. I've got six pitchers I've been starting regularly recently. And I'll count on them In the series," Southworth said. "There are three right-handers, Mort Coop er, Murry Dickson and Howard Krlst, and three left-handers, Max Lanier, Brazle and Bre cheen." Asked If he has any hesitancy about starting Brecheen and Bra zle against the Yankees because they were rookies, he said: "None at all. They've proved they can pitch good ball and that's enough for me. A year aco the experts talked about what an advantage the Yankees' experi ence would give them. As it turned out, it didn't mean a thing." Would Mort Cooper be his No. 1 pitching choice for the series? "I wouldn't say about that," Billy countered. Los Angeles divided with Se attle In yesterday's double-header but finished the season with a 21-game margin over San Franclco after the Seala were trimmed twice by the fourth place Portland Beavers. The Beavers and Seals will meet In the other playoff series.
