JANUARY 10, 1943 ITER PROSPECTS FOR WILEY AND STATE The almost unprecented rains of November and December, which brought the most damag ing floods of decade to up-state valleys, have supplied most Ore gon watersheds with an unusu ally handsome back-log of moun tain snow. According to preliminary 1943 snow surveys reaching the Med- ford headquarters of the Ore gon Snow Surveys, mountain snow supplies are well above average in the Klamath, Des chutes, John Day, Grande Ronde. Powder, Burnt, Malheur and Owyhee river basins of Central and Eastern Oregon. Snow stored water is unusually heavy on the Willamette river headwaters. The January 1 snow water con tent of 32 inches at Hogg Pass Snow Course on the Santiam Deschutes divide Is the greatest of record on any Oregon snow course for this season of year. Snuw surveyors of the U. S. Soil Conservation Service and Oregon Experiment Station and cooperating agencies report the snow blankets wet and unfrozen ground. This favors a sustained run-off when snow melting be gins. Snow supplies at Hyatt Res ervoir are only average, but the reservoir now holds more than the usual amount of water for this season of year, according to Robert Kent, project manager. The rate of inflow is above aver age for tliis time of year. Snow supplies near Fish Lake and Four Mile Lake, sources of sup ply for the Medford and Rogue River Irrigation Districts, ac cording to reports reaching the Medford Irrigation District, are from 200 to 300 per cent average. Higher elevation snow courses. where phenomenal snow depths sometimes are registered, are mostly unmeasured until Janu ary last and the 1943 water sup ply outlook will be more defi nite after these report come in. In the meantime, however, the January 1 jutlook for 1943 Ore gon water supplies will be en couraging to irrigation farmers who are being ooked to for greatly Increased farm produc tion In 1943. The huge ship took off from the Lockheed air terminal here after giving thousands of spec tators an unscheduled demon stration of the carbon dioxide fire extinguishers within her na celles. As the Constellation roared downfield for a takeoff, flames burst from one of her four 2000-horsepower Wright engines. The blaze instantly was snuffed out by fire-smothering gas. Pilot Eddie Allen then taxied his mammoth charge lazily back to her starting point and lifted her into the air with ease and grace. The third largest plane In ex Istence, exceeded in size only by the Douglas B-19 and the Glenn Martin Mars, the Constel lation is larger and faster than any transport now in production. The ship was commissioner In pre-war days by Howard Hughes a a luxury stratosphere airliner to cross the continent in nine hours. Military secrecy shrouded technical details but permitted revelation of the plane's ability to fly fully loaded on one gallon of gasoline per mile overall. According to Lockheed engi neers, the Constellation can span the ocean carrying a light tank and its crew or the equivalent In men and cargo. Fully loaded, the ship is faster than a Japa nese Zero fighter or any four motored bomber i.ow In service. ADELE NIEDRICH PASSES, AGED 59 Adcle Swadley Nledrlch, 89, wife of Charles Niedrlch, passed away at the family residence. 34 Willamette street, Saturday morning, after a very brief ill ness. Mrs. Niedrlch was born in Peoria, 111.. Feb. 2. 1883. She was united in marriage to Lnarles Niedrlch at Kewanee, 111.. Feb. 15, 1920. In 1926 they moved to San Pedro. Cal.. liv ing there three years and com ing to Medford in 1929. Mrs Niedrlch was a fine Christian woman, and wonder ful neighbor, and will be missed py a host of friends. Besides her husband. h leaves one son, George C. Wil- mot, wno is a warrant officer In the United States navy; her aged motner, Mrs. Lydia Heinkle. ana one brother, Owen Swadley both of East Galesbursh. 111.: one grandchild, Georganne Wil-I mot. Funeral service In charge of ren runerai noma will be an nounced later. Announcement was made Sat urday of the purchase of the Big Y Super Market by Kampfer Brother of Albany, present oper ators of the meat department in that food store. The financial consideration was not revealed. The Big Y is closed today for inventory as a necessary factor in the transaction, and will re open for business a usual Mon day morning. Arnold Kampfer, Albany busi ness man, was in Medford Sat urday completing details of the purchase. Announcement of the appointment of L. A. McCor mack, well known Albany food store operator, as manager of the Big Y, was announced by Mr Kampfer. McCormack will move to this city with his family at once and establish permanent relsdence here. The Big Y market ha been operated since its establishment by D. H. McCargar of Grants Pass and Lester Nielsen of this city, with the latter as manager Mr. Nielsen, an army reserve of ficer, is expecting an early call for active service with the armed forces, a fact which has made necessary the sale of the large food store on the north Pacific highway. McCargar has exten sive interests In southern Oregon and northern California and re linquishes his Interest in the Big Y to devote his time to these properties. The existing business policies and entire personnel will be re tained under the new manage ment, Arnold Kampfer said while In Medford Saturday. Mr. Kampfer and his associates have been identified with the Big Y market since it establishment here. Mr. Nielsen emphasized the In tention of his family to return to Medford after the war and re-establish their home here. He was born In Oldenberg Germany. Nov. 9, 1853, coming to the United States when he was about 15 years of age. From 1910 to 1912 he made his home in Rogue River, then moved to Eu gene, where he had resided since His wife. Mrs. Lena Stolle, passed away in Eugene, last April. He had been a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge for the past 40 years. Four children survive: Mr. Violet Canoles, San Rafael, Cal.; Mrs. F. E. Hall, Rogue River; Omer Stolle, Rogue River, and Arthur Stolle, of Seattle. Wash. The remain were forwarded Saturday evening to Eugene by the Conger Funeral parlors, where the service will be held Monday afternoon. Firs! Methodist To Celebrate Retiring Of Final Mortgage The First Methodist church will celebrate the retiring of the last mortgage against the property In today' service. Rev. Joseph Knott will be toastmaster and Mary Anne Gates will ling, "British Chil dren'i Prayer." The choir of the Post Chapel Including 20 male voices will sing several numbers at the eve ning service at 7:30 o'clock and Dr. Fairham will again preach.
