British labor leaders, visiting
Portland and Vancouver, Wash.,
shipyards as part of an extended
tour of inspection, said today
that British yards were far short
of the manpower required for
top-speed production.
A. Gunn, undersecretary of the
British ministry of labor, said
the manpower question found
British shipyards "cbsoluteiy desperate."
The entire man and woman-
power of the country has been
mobilized and allocated to their
proper work," he said. "But we
are still short of our needs."
The delegation of nine came
to the United States at the invi
tation of the department of la
bor and leading shipbuilding un
ions. They also inspected numer
ous Canadian yards at the do
minion s invitation.
The British labor officials,
