Kil wv burn, commander of the 11th Armored Division, Camp Polk, La. 12 MEET DEATH F E Roundup, Mont, Dec. 31 OI.R) The death toll mounted to 12 today in the crash of a four- 0 motored bomber which slammed to earth and burned near here yesterday. The flying fortress cracked up when it attempted to make a crash landing on a tiny meadow 23 miles east of here along the highway between Musselshell and Custer. Officers at the Great Falls airbase, where the plane had taken off early yesterday after noon on a routine flight, had previously announced that 11 bodies were recovered. Later a twelfth was found. W. Wilson. S48 W. Holly street. Hot ashes dumped into a wooden box had set fire to the box, but no damage resulted to the room. Naval Training Station, Farragut, Idaho. Course Offered Jaekson county chapter of American Red Cross is offering a course in home nursing In the Oak Grove community. All Interested are urged to d present. Bowerman Son Word has been received here of the birth of a second son Dec. 18 to Lieut, and Mrs. William J. Bowerman. The baby weighed seven pounds, four ounces and has been named William John Bowerman. Lt. Bowerman, former director of athletics at Medford senior high school, is special service officer at ft Lawton, Seattle. The Bowermans' other son, Jon, is four years old. New Ways Are Found For Destruction Of Louisiana Crawfish Baton Rouse. La. (U.F9 Craw- tlsh-eating gourmets who regard the Louisiana crustacean as a high delicacy will indeed shud der when they hear the newest methods of destroying the water- inhabitant now a menace to agriculture In certain parts of the state. At this time of the year thev literally destroy acres of fertile Louisiana soil by burrowing through the ground in their search for water levels. Tun nels dug by crawfish cause soil erosion during rainy weather, and the dirt from these burrows frequently covers Important field crops, completely destroy ing them. Dr. C. O. Eddy, entomologist of the Loisiana Agriculture Ex periment station, has been ex perimenting with various means of control. Most of the methods involve solutions of household staples and experiments with them at Louisiana State univer sity have proved successful. An effective home-made emul sion suggested by Dr. Eddy may be prepared by dissolving three fourths pound of laundry soap in one gallon of boiling water. When dissolved, add two gallons of turpentine to make a milky white mixture. For field use, one gallon of this emulsion is diluted with 40 gallons of water, and should be applied to the burrows at the rate of about one-half teacup or less to each hole. Suburbanite Knows Possum Garden City, N. Y. 0I.PJ The neighbors of John E. Cahill architect, smiled tolerantly when he told of seeing an oppossum squatting on his front lawn in the moonlight "Must have been a big rabbit or a cat or moon shine." they said. "Possums don't live in the suburbs." But today Cahill knew his eyes hadn't deceived him. He found the oppossum a 10-pounder dead by the side of the road not far from his house. Stim son In a New Year's resume, to day marked the country's 2W year transformation from a "great, helpless, peaceful nation" to one that is the "best-equipped for war the world has ever seen." Stlmson said that when he went Into office In July. 1940, the United States had a regular army of only 203,000 men. In cluding an air force of 50,000. with only 2,175 pilots. "Today," he continued, "we have an army of over 5,000,000, of which well over 1,000.000 con stitute the air force, including tens of thousands of pilots. Stlmson said that when he first took office the nation was so ill-prepared that it did not have enough gunpowder to supply for one day the men we now have overseas. From this we have changed to a nation that has an army "now rapidly being equipped with the best airplanes that are in the air today, with the best tanks that are on the grounds today with the best self-propelled ar tillery that is in action today, and with the best rifles that are In use in any part of the world. "This army is being trained with more solicitous care for its health, its physical condition, its mental and moral welfare, than any former American army in our history. This is a fact I am glad to be able to emphasize for the bene fit of parents and families of the men of our army," Stlmson said. The average American loldler of today Is well ahead in health, and weighs eight pounds more than his fellow in 1918, the sec retary reported. The percentage who are graduates oi nign school is three times as large as during the last war, over 50 per cent do not drink at all, about 40 per cent drink beer, and "only the very small remainder, distilled liauor." he said. About 60 per cent of the men In the army today go consistently to church, Stlmson said. KNEW MORE NAMES San Jose, Cal.
