Local Visitor Mrs. Naomi Montgomery of Portland is a visitor at the J. A. Perry home 604 West Main street Mrs. Montgomery is a former Med ford resident. Lodge' to Meal Crater Lake Aerie, No. 2093, Fraternal Order of Eagles, has scheduled initi ation tomorrow at 8 p. m. to be followed at 9 p. m. by a New Year's eve dance. The meeting will last only one hour, officers stated, and the rest of the eve , nlng will be devoted to dancing. Return to School The Misses Verna and Beth Clngcade and Coleman Hill of Phoenix return ed Monday to their classes at - Oregon State college after a two-week vacation at home. Vema Clngcade Is majoring in education and her sister in home economics. Both are seniors this year. Young Hill is a sophomore. Is Commissioned Dr. A. J. Loeffler returned yesterday from Portland where he receiv ed notice of being commissioned a lieutenant commander in the U. 8. navy. He is to report to the Tongue Point naval air base on the Oregon -coast January 11. Mrs. Loeffler accompanied her husband to Portland, but will re main In Medford at the family home, 400 N. Ivy street, after the doctor reports for duty. The Loefflers have resided in Med ford for five years, coming here from Detroit, Mich., where Dr. Loeffler practiced for many years. Durno in Denver Dr. Edwin R. Durno, for many years a well known Medford physician, and now with the U. S. army medical corps, has been transferred from Barnes General hospital at Van couver to Fitzslmmons General hospital, Denver, Colo. Dr. Durno. accompanied by his wife, left Medford Dec. 21 after a short stay here to transact busi ness, and was to report in Den ver Dec. 26. The Durnos' three daughters are remaining in Med ford with Dr. Durno's mother, Mrs. J. P. Durno of Eugene. Dr. and Mrs. Durno made the trip to Denver by car and reported travelling conditions to be very bad due to heavy snow. Wllllts Leaves William Hark Willits, seaman 2c, of the U.S.S. Boise, left Ashland last night to return to Philadelphia, where his ship is docked for repairs. Bill has been home on furlough, visiting his mother and grand father In Ashland and other relatives and friends In Medford, Applegate and Portland. He en listed in the navy last April and except for the preliminary train ing at San Diego Naval Station he has spent the last eight months on the Boise, which gave such a good account of herself In the Solomons battle of Octo ber 11-12. There the "one-ship fleet,' as she was called, was largely responsible for sinking six Jap warships In a single en ' gagement off Guadalcanal. He is stationed at Camp Adair at Corvallis with the 8th signal corps. Returns io School Stanley Jones, Jr., returned to Univer sity of Oregon at Eugene this week after spending the holi days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley C. Jones, 512 Penn sylvania avenue. Jones Is con tinuing his studies under the na val reserve V-l program and Is registered in business adminis tration and law. He recently pledged Phi Kappa Psi frater nity. Officers and men of the 91st Infantry Division at Camp White apparently were treated OK by Santa Claus, in view of the tre mendous volume of Christmas parcels handled by the 91st post office. In a 10-day period prior to Dec. 25, more than 2,400 sacks carrying an estimated 40,000 parcels more than two pack ages for every man In the di vision were handled at the division postoffice. If this mail had been received at one time, it would have filled three box cars. In one day alone 314 sacks were received. The 91st Division postoffice is under the supervision of Lt. Robert H. This will re sult in the local offices being open from 8 until 8 p. m. every day. including Saturday. Usual ly the offices have observed the popular Saturday noon closing time. Notice of the change was re ceived last Saturday by wire, with orders that it was to be effective that day. As yet no word of the change has been sent to offices of the Crater Lake National park serv ice in Medford, according to E. P. Leavitt, superintendent. Mr. Leavitt pointed out that the work of the forest service is very closely identified with the war effort and that this is not true of the work of the park service. He added that the park service had added an hour to the working week last summer and that the service was operat ing with a greatly curtailed staff due to the war, with a perma nent personnel of only eight at present as compared to the usual 25 persons.
