By Edward L. Thomas (United Press Correspondent) Guatemala City (U.R) The re public of Guatemala lg playing an important role In propor tion to her size In the United Nations war program, snd Pre sident Jorge Ubico has aligned the nation firmly In the ranks of the countries at war against the Axis powers. Guatemala's most Important contribution to the war lies In the economic field, snd the na tion is making Increasing con- tributions aa a purveyor ot vital materials. One of the largest quinine plantations In the western hemisphere Is located In north western ' Guatemala near the Mexican border. It was form erly operated by Germans. Prior to the war few knew of its exist ence, and even fewer had any idea of its size or value. Shortly after Guatemala declared war on the Axis goon after the at tack on Pearl Harbor the gov ernment took over control of the plantation, and today long lines of ancient two-wheeled ox carts, laden with piles of quin ine bark, move over the new and excellent roads to railway and shipping centers. Search For Ores United States engineers are exploring the mountainous high lands for minerals, and, accord ing to reliable reports, already have found a number of work able deposits. Important enough to begin exploitation and to ship ores to United States smelters and factories. The nature and quantity of these minerals now being exported Is reserved as a military secret When Gen. Jorge Ubico be came president of this country 12 years ago he started a road- building program, designed to establish a system of highways that would open his country to motor traffic and put an end to the universal use of mule trains and oxcarts for the country's transportation. Today Guate mala has what many regard as one of the best road systems In Central America, and although wartime shortages of automo tive vehicles is responsible for keeping the oxcart still In serv ice to a large extent, tne coun try's transportation will be greatly modernized after the war. A section of the Pan-Ameri can highway system Is now be ing rushed to completion slong the Pacific coast under ruper- vislon ot U. S. engineers. It will be strictly for military use at the outset, but later It Is to be developed for regular traffic. Guatemala coffee, considered by its growers as among the world's best. Is the country's chief product Carloads of both coffee and bananas are being exported steadily, and shippers report that shipping insurance rates in the Caribbean area have dropped considerably late ly. This is taken as an Indica tion that the Axis submarine campaign Is being brought un der control. v j Control Over Germans The government dealth with Axis nationals swiftly and ef ficiently, and the large German population was placed under control. Business firms and in dividuals were blacklisted, and a strict censorship controls all communications to and frorn the country. A pro-democratic spirit lg evi dent here on virtually every hand. Most of the downtown shops display "V" for victory posters, and many of them show pictures of United States mili tary and naval leaders In their windows, A huge United States army airfield is located In Guatemala, and It Is used as a key base for patrol of the seaways on the ap proaches to the Panama Canal. Almost dally patrol flights are operated from this base, and there has been only one fatal accident Thirteen men were killed two months ago when a flying fortress struck a moun tain in a t.lck fog. The victims are burled In a mall plot near the scene of the crash, with white headstones marking each grave and a monu ment within the white fence en closing the cemetery.
