(U.PJ The gov ernment's re-alignment of war production schedules has eased, at least temporarily, the antici pated labor shortage in this vital industrial area. Industry leaders forecast downward revision of estimates of required labor supply be cause of two factors: I For strategical reasons, the government's concentration on some types of war products at the expense of others. I Shortages of material. War production by the auto motive industry was expeciea m total $22,000,000 daily by Janu ary 1, 1943, equivalent to an an nual rate of $8,000,000,000, be fore changes in schedules were made by government leaders at Washington. Produce Lass Trucks Although war production In the industry is at a record level, there has been a tapering off in output of certain items, includ ing trucks. This change of em phasis in the production pro gram is expected to reduce the industry's January, 1943, output below previous schedules and fnrr a downward revision of mnlnvment estimates. The U. S. employment service recently forecast that employ ment in Wayne county (Detroit) would total approximately 743, 000 in February, 1943, an in crease of 87,000 over present levels. This total was expected to reach 778,000 when the De troit area war plants reached peak production sometime dur ing 1943. George Romney, managing di rector of the Automotive coun cil for War Production, said ttie change in war production sched ules would relieve the antici pated labor shortage for the pre sent and eliminate need for drastic manpower legislation un der consideration by the govern ment. C. E. Wilson, president of General Motors Corp., one of the largest employers of labor in the county, already has ex pressed opposition to job freez ing or compulsory shifting of war workers from one plant to another. He recommended en larged training programs and a longer work week as methods for possible solution of the man rjower Droblem. Employment of women thus far has been comparatively light in the Detroit area. According to the federal employment serv ice, there now are 57,656 women at work in Detroit area war plants, nearly 12,000 of them hired during October. John L. Craig, director of the service here, said present estimates re veal that nearly 100,000 addi- tional women must accept war plant or essential non-factory iobs during the next year. Nearly 200,000 women in this area already have expressed willingness to accept wartime employment. ' Many of them now are receiving training for war work in free vocational courses conducted by school boards throughout the Detroit area. Undertone fully steady; good to choice lambs salable 614 00 614.79; good choice ewes 67.00-67.50. 3 1-2 PER CENT At the- regular December meeting of the board of direct or of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Medford, a 3Vi dividend was declared for the past six months payable Jan uary 1, 1943. Commenting on the dividend, R. F. Kyle, secretary-manager of the association, stated that the rate was higher than most Oregon savings and loans were paying and that Med ford and vicinity had been fortu nate in having defense activity which had caused new loans be cause of the increased real es tate activity. The dividend trend is definitely downward and divi dends of 2Vi and 3 will be common in the future providing the war emergency continues. Kyle said. The board voted to support the war effort to the fullest extent Dy encouraging investors to Duy war bonds and for the associa tion to invest its available money in war bonds. The armed forces have claimed two of the active directors. Cap tain Wm. H. Fluhrer of the Unit ed States Air Force and Max Peirce, lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve. Resolu tions were passed deploring their absence and wishing them good luck and provisions were made for them to resume their duties with the association when the war is won. The voluntary Inductions will be permitted until Feb. 1, or un til War Manpower Chief Paul V. McNutt and the army and navy departments reach an agreement on how men shall be allotted by draft boards to the various serv ices. Despite months of discussion in and out of congress about the advisability of stopping enlist ments, no plan has been evolved on how draftees shall be allotted to the naval branches which heretofore have depended en tirely upon enlistments. William O'Neil, president of General, said the purchase was the first step in post-war expan sion plans of the rubber com pany. (U.PJ The 1942 year-end recovery got under way on the stock market today with sales volume the best since November 9, and prices of the industrial group reaching levels fractionally under the year's highs. A smart recovery in railroad issues aided market sentiment and generated . buying in other sections. Many issues, mostly in indus trials, made new highs for the year and longer.
