Nye, Medford fruit grower, has been promoted to major, accord ing to word received today by his mother, Mrs. S. A. Nye, of Talent. Mr. Nye, who held an army reserve commission as cap tain, entered active service last January. He has been in the reserve for 22 years. Major Nye is stationed at-New Orleans (La.) Mitch Russell, 803 North Riverside told city police that his T-gas ration book had been taken from his truck. Numbers Transferred Ar rangements have been made by the OPA with the secretary of state to transfer gasoline ration book numbers now on the 1942 auto registration card to the 1943 card so persons may make application for automobile li cense at the county sheriff's of fice. e In Texas Shelby G. Tuttle, former Medford resident, sent Christmas greetings to the city school superintendent's office to day. Tuttle, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Tuttle of 940 Whit man avenue, is stationed at the San Antonio Aviation cadet cen ter, pre-f light school, at San Antonio, Tex. At Training Center Paul Clement, who was Inducted re cently into the U. S. army has been assigned for training to the medical replacement training center here. His training wil embrace eight weeks, after which he will be assigned for duty to some medical depart ment organization. Clement is a former Medford resident. DALIAN STUDENTS WILL STAY HOI By United Press The German radio said that some 300,000 Italian school chil dren would be instructed at home by radio while schools are closed from today until Febru ary 16. i In a dispatch from Rome, broadcast In English, the Ger , man trans-ocean news service ' explained that the closing of! the schools for the Christmas holidays "had to be prolonged ; owing to a shortage of coal." Reports last week from Italy by way of neutral Switzerland inti-1 mated that the closing was part of the Italian government's plan for evacuating children and oth-1 era from -cities suject to air I raids. Ore., Dec. 15 AJB The state highway commission today announced allocation of state gasoline tax funds to the various counties on the basis of registrations from each county during 1941. The December allo cation of $1,200,000 brought the total for the year to 2,000,000. County allocations, each' 50 per cent greater than a similar allo cation last July, Included: Clackamas, $58,047.13; Clat sop, $27,028 93; Coos. $33,943.30; Deschutes, $21,699.79; Jackson, $43,895.82; Lane, $81,974.51; Linn, $37,146.85; Multnomah, $371,893.87; Union, $18,650.62. LET'S MAKE CHRISTMAS A JOYOUS DAY FOR EVERY CAMP WHITE SERVICE MAN ' FOR OFFENSIVE Chungking, Dee. 15 (U.R) Japanese army trucks carrying artillery and supplies are mov ing up the Burma road n Lashlo to Lungling, probably in preparation for another offen sive into China, a Chinese mili tary spokesman said today. Intelligence reports were that 30 artillery pieces had reached the Japanese advance base at Lungling and for 10 days the enemy has been concentrating foodstuffs at Tengchung. It was estimated that there were 30,000 Japanese troops in the Teng-chunfc-Lungling sector and there were reports thet two more di visions were being sent. Chinese forces had frustrated temporarily an offensive from Tengchung. The Japanese, how ever, were believed making ready to cross the Salween river for a drive toward Paoshan. Younker of Mather field had some uncomfortable momenta when his plane ran low on gas over the rugged Slskiyoua but his successful landing on an unlighted airfield with a dry gasoline tank brought a happy ending to his flight. Younker was en route from Seattle to Sacramento and was unable to refuel at Medford, Ore. Circling over Redding at 10,- 000 feet, Younker admitted he did "some sincere praying" for a landing field.
