K MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER, 10, 1942. 1AGE FIVE Soldier of 91st Is Veteran Of Convoy Trip to Murmansk; Hit 47 Times By Shrapnel Pvt. William C. Lindner, now on duty In the G-2 section of the 01st Infantry Division Headquarters, has in the past year enlisted in the navy, been on aconvoy to Murmansk, Russia and back to the U. S.; was discharged from the navy because of wounds received in action, and been Inducted into the army. This all happened in the short period of one year and here is the story. Shortly after December 7. when the United States was sud denly plunged into".he war, Lind ner enlisted in the navy as radio operator of naval aircraft. He was sent Immediately to England to study secret radio techniaue for two months. In February of 184Z, Lindner returned to the United States with the assign ment to be a radioman on the ill-fated Normandie and arrived in New York the day after the Normandie had burned. Being a sailor without a ship, orders were soon received placing him on the U. S. S. Washington, which was then bound for a secret ren dezvous to lead a convoy to Mur mansk. The convoy was soon subjected to Intensive bombings by ene my planes. One afternoon after three consecutive days of repeat ed raids, Lindner, then second class petty officer radioman, was seated in the rear cockpit of one of the ship's scouting planes, manning the machine guns and waiting for the plane to be cata pulted off. The ship was being subjected to intensive raids by German Stuka divebombers and torpedo planes, and had just re ceived a direct hit amidships when another bomb landed be side the catapult. . "The explosion split the plane In half, killing the pilot and throwing me into the sea," he recalled. "I don't remember any thing while I floated in that icy water for 3' 4 hours because I was unconscious. My life jacket saved my life and that is the only reason I am here today. One of our escort destroyers picked me up and brought me to with a shot of morphine. I was then taken to the ship's hospital and upon examination, it was found that I had received 47 pieces of shrapnel in my back and legs." 'Lindner was in the sick bay the remainder of the way to Mur mansk and also for the return trip to the United States. The They're Still U. S. Prisoners ship docked In Brooklyn, N. Y- the latter part of April and Lindner was placed in the Naval hospital, where he remained un til he was medically discharged in July because of the wounds he had received. Thinking the war was prob ably over for him, he returned to his home In Michigan to recu- perate. His condition became markedly Improved and on Oc tober 11 he received a notice from his draft board that he had three days to enlist or be draft ed. Lindner again enlisted, but this time in the army. He was sent to Ft. Sheridan, 111., for as signment and then came to Camp White, where he has been as signed to Headquarters Company of the 91st Division. Pvt. William C. Lindner was born in Manasha, Wis., on Sept. 2, 1915. Upon graduation from Lawrence college in 1933 he spent two years in the army and then seven years on the Glencoe, 111., police force. During this time he attended the FBI police academy for three months in 1938. Lindner's hobby before the army and navy took him over was flying. He now has 670 logged hours to his credit. Pvt. Lindner said that he was glad to be back in the service and hoped that his experience could help his work in Intelli gence for the 91st division. Sugar Stamp No. 9 To Expire Dec. The recent announcement that the Engineers Cafeteria, located near the south gate to Camp White, would be closed after December 1 brought forth groans from large clientele. The place has always been very popular, food excellent and pricVs moderate. Success and popularity Increased with growth of the camp and there was a definite demand for con tinuance of operation. From Headquarters, Camp White, comes the welcome an nouncement that business will not be suspended for the time being. The Engineers Cafeteria will remain under the present management and with the pres ent personnel. Clarifying fat drippings will remove the fat's characteristic flavor. Mixed with twice as much water, the fat Is boiled for ten minutes. The mixture is stirred while boiling, and then left to cool. The school and the Roxy Ann Grange will combine their Christmas program and have it at the Grange hall December 23. Mrs. Lehman was elected news reporter for the commu nity. It will help lots if any one having news will leave it at the school on account of the gas rationing, Roxy Ann 4-H club met at the Grange hall December 4 and received their pins present- -ed by Mr. McKenzie. j Extension unit meets Decern-, ber 11 at 10:30 . m. at the Grange hall.
