Don is a major in the air force. After he left Medford, he got his fin ers stained with printer's ink at - Washington, D. C, where he en tered the army eight months ago. Need Inspectors The United States Civil Service commission has announced the urgent need for locomotive inspector's at $1,000 per year plus $5 a day while in travel status, and also car inspectors and traveling in spectors at $1,620 a year plus $5 a day while in traveling sta tus. Dial 3170 GOOD or BAD The "Victory News", a publi cation of the General Electric, In a recent issue is reported as hav ing printed the following: "Ann Arbor. ' "All members of the sulfa drug family have a poisonous effect on the nervous system, the parent substance be ing the least poisonous and some of the newer sulfa drugs the most poisonous. Dr. Sam C. Little of the University of Michi gan Medical School reports. He found that the more toxic the drug are to bacteria the more toxic they are to the human cell.' " As the human cell contains the life element of the body, anything that is toxic or injuri ous to it is detrimental to the whole organism. And not only are the sulfa drugs Injurious to the nervous system but to the blood cells also. It is to be admit ted that th.se drugs have done some good, but in the end will the good outweigh the damage contributed by them. VISITING CENTER By actual count 2.945 persons entered the Medford USO Satur day to set an all-time attendance record, according to John Hir schler, USO official. A count of those coming into USO was made between 9 a. m. and lip. m. This new record highlights the urgent need for proper building facilities and an ade quate recreation program for the service men of Camp White, Mr. Hirschler stated. From 8 until 11 p. m. Satur day men entered the main door of USO at a rate of 100 every 15 minutes. The problem that lies ahead for Medford is even greater than that imposed on nearby Portland or San Fran cisco, local USO board officials stated, adding that present indi cations are that the Federal Se curities administration will not be able to complete the USO facility in the former Gates building until lometime next year. Looking forward to the new USO quarters Penny Fontaine. USO official, is cooperating in hostess campaign with the Outpost. It is hoped to be able to triple the registration of USO volunteer workers in order to bring the staff to working capa city. Any unmarried girl or married woman over the age of 18 is invited to register at the USO for this service. A variety of positions are available such as checking, senior hostesses, junior hostesses, games leader and information. Mrs. Fontaine said "In the present campaign for hostesses it becomes clear that all Med ford women from 18 to 65 must do their part to help win this war. Service men entering the USO each day are just like the men who fought at Bataan and those in North Africa. Who knows but what these men will be facing the same battles next month or next year? Chile is financing exploration work in an effort to find a local source of petroleum to alleviate gasoline shortage, the depart ment of commerce reports. Industrial- workers to be eli gible for preferred mileage, which is a "C" book, must in nearly every instance form a car-sharing arrangement with their fellow workers. Registra tion for the car-sharing clubs may be made through a number of local service stations, by con tacting neighbors and other means It was explained. Board members said it was not necessary for supplement ary gasoline ration applications to be sent to the rationing board office immediately but may be mailed to the office after the mo or 1st is assured that the "A" book will be Insufficient to meet his needs. Scientists End Probe Into Art Of Snoring; Discover Many Causes Madison. Wis. (U.R) The inde licate and neglected art of snor ing came into its own recently with an announcement by the Wisconsin Medical society in a bulletin that scientists, after long research , have tabulated the emanations from the soft pal ate and uvula" according to re sonance, tone, pitch, volume and frequency. Snoring, when done by an ex pert, can produce as much noise as a battery of clacking type writers and ringing telephones in a busy' office, the study re vealed. A wheezy automobile is hard put to match the snores of a sound-winded man with "a projecting mass of swollen mu cous membrane and deviated wall between the nasal cavities.' And yet, the bulletin pointed out, only one out of 10 snorers knows he has the habit, even though he may be awakened by the thunder of his own noc turnal rumblings. The snore, ranging from a de licate nasal rasp to a deep rum bling roar, has many causes, the scientists noted. The sleeper in variably has his mouth open. It may be caused simply by re laxed jaw muscles or, more seri ous, tumor growths, bony defor mities, enlarged adenoids, sinus infection, or colds. Cigarette smoking unquestionably contri butes to snoring, the bulletin re ported. "There la little more to learn about the snore today," the re port concluded, apparently sat isfied that its findings would be the definite work on the sub ject "MEANEST THIEF" San Jose, Cal. Before he died, the boy told his parents the shooting was no fault of his companion.
