AT fWTHE (ContlnuM Prom Pint One) "know how things are done In the army" and resent taking or ders from individuals who have been in the army only a short time. ' FRUIT packers and others In the Pacific northwest who ex pect to use tin cans for the dura tion would do well to contem plate figures recently issued by war production board. Normal peace-time needs of tin have ranged from 63.000 to 70,000 tons for all purposes. In 1941 the use rose to 110,000 tons, of which 98 per cent came from the south Pacific, mainly Feder ated Maylay States. It is the plan of WPB, it is reported, to cut total consumption over the coun try this year to 62,000 tons and for 1943 to 48,000 tons. Such cuts cannot be attained without reduction in the use of tin cans. Bolivia's production Is being stepped up; Just how much Is not revealed. Tin from tin cans and tin plate scrap is expected to reach 6,000 tons that Is, pro vided housewives, hotels and restaurants make serious effort to save the usual waste. Not more than 1,000 tons of tin are secured from all other regions or sources than those mentioned, Including Alaska, the United States and Mexico. It Is known that Bollva has large deposits of tin ore, a heavy percentage of which is lower than normal commercial grades. Early steps to get this ore pro duced first encountered one of those usually restrictive cartels. Then ownership and operating conditions created problems causing further delay. After that, the only excuse for further delay and Inaction was found In the ponderous and Inefficient machinery of Reconstruction Finance. National Advisory Com mittee, office of production man agement, and now war produc tion board. These agencies have often been likened to "the mills of the gods," which grind slow ly but exceedingly small. Many efforts by Americans to produce tin in other fields have bren so ground by the Washington mUl.' ONE result of the shortage of tin, unless a cheap and satisfac tory substitute carl be found, will be Increased use of frozen foods. Already the war Is bring ing frozen foods into camps, hos pitals and military Institution In ever Increasing quantity. The problem of keepinu butter In the tropics, however, is about to be solved from an entirely different angle. Dr. Goorce E. Holm. In charge of bureau of dairy In dustry fat-spoilage research, has perfected a method of preparing pure butter-f.it and packaging it so that it will keep almost in- Kugh A. Communications Five Sons In Armed Forces! To the Editor: Here In Butte Falls we have some people we think should get their names in the paper. I have been hoping our cor respondent or someone who could do It better than I would write this but I can keep still no longer. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Tungate are the ones of whom I speak and they are the parents of eight children, two of them girls rais ing families here In Oregon. The sons, five of whom are in the armed forces, are as fol lows: Joe. or Merritt as we used to call him, is a pilot; Jim I in the navy, and hi twin brother, Frank, Is an ambulance driver. Bud and Herb, the youngest, the marines. Raymond Is a welder In a Portland shipyard, and who has a right to say his job Is any less Important than the others. Mom and Dad to the children, they are Jack and Blanche to us neighbors. Jack takes what we call the graveyard watch at the Airplane Spotter cabin and I am proud and happy that Blanche goes with me each Saturday eve ning from 6 to 10 p. m. Can Jackson county surpass or even equal this coupler We doubt It. Truly, such folks should be honored and I fear we are all of us too busy calling names, etc.. sometimes to stop and remember that we are really in a War with a capital "W."
