Taking Course Among men undergoing the four-week non commissioned officers' course at Camp Roberts, Calif., is Pvt. Horace Mecklem, Jr., of 27 North Holly street, according to a report from the camp. Upon completion of the course the A. majority of graduates are as signed to Ft. Benning, Ga,-for officer's training. ... To Graduate Cadet Joseph E. Hillis, a Medford high alum nus, will be graduated and re ceive his commission as a sec ond lieutenant at Edgewood Ar senal, Md., on October 3, accord ing to word received from there. He was chosen from the ranks for this training because of ex cellence in military record, edu cation and character. ... Final Meeting The final meeting in civilian defense will be held Wednesday, September SO,, 7:30 p. m., at the senior high school for employees of Timber Products and the Medford Cor poration. Traffic Violators Appearing in city police court yesterday were Cecil Hughes, charged with one headlight, fined $1; Helen Green, no operator's 11 cense, $5 fine; J. C. S. army and Canadian fighter pilots in last Friday's raid on Klska harbor. Attacks of the fighter planes on the two subs was a feature of the most recent air assault . the enemy-held base in the Aleutians. The low-flying pursuit ships also destroyed several Japanese single-float fighters, hit two car go ships, setting one afire, and wrecked possibly eight out of 10 cruiser-type biplanes. Group Commander Jack Chen nault, son of Gen. Claire Chen nault of the former Flying Tificrs of China, sent one Jap fighter to its doom over Kiska harbor, us ing tactics taught by his famous father. The Canadian squadron com mander, Kenneth Boomer of Ot tawa, Canada, downed another Jap fighter and a third Jap fighter was shot down by Lieut. Gerald R. Johnson of Eugene, Ore. A Jap submarine surfaced under a fighter squadron led by Major Wilbur Miller of Living stone, Tex. The squadron formed a circle with the submarine on the outer rim and as each plane came around, cannon slugs beat a chorus on the vessel. Each plane got three cracks at the sub before it dove. As in previous raids on Klska, all the planes were army craft. There were no losses in the attack, the first joint U. S. -Canadian raid. "The Japs are now getting an Idea of what Corregidor was like for our men," an air force of ficer said after the raid. Eight Qualify In Oriental Gardens Jitterbug Contest .
